4. You don’t get to find out.

On your way to Chuck’s office, you’re interrupted by Jack Warren. You vaguely know the director of your internship programs, but you haven’t spent much time with someone so low down the totem pole from you. He’s a weedy man with ashy blonde hair and square rim glasses. He nervously approaches you.

“Richard, could we speak in your office?”

You raise an eyebrow. What could this paean want? “Sure Jack.” You wave for him to follow you as you go back to your office.

He enters shortly after you and shuts the door softly.

“So what do you want?” You sit behind your desk again. Jack grabs one of the chairs in front of your desk and perches on the edge.

“Well, I’ve just heard something that concerned me from Annabelle.”

‘Shit’ you think to yourself. You were sure she wouldn’t talk.

“And I wanted to know if I needed to make an HR report. From what I’ve seen of you, I’m sure you wouldn’t make the mistake of trying to fuck your intern on her first day no less.”

You can’t tell if he’s kidding. The secretaries knew what to expect when called to your office and even go so far as to coach their new hires. Hell, you’d shared secretaries with the boys in the c-suite before. Surely one of the unit directors would know how you like to de-stress throughout the work day.

“I can’t tell if you’re joking Jack, but either way she initiated everything.”

“Richard…” He sighs. “Interns are skittish. They don’t know how a real office works. I know we haven’t assigned one to you before, but I guess I’d thought you’d be willing to play a longer game. Anyway, damage control time, you say she initiated?”

You smile. “I expect excellence of my interns and that includes how to comport with office culture. And yes. She did.”

It was a bit of a stretch. But she had picked massage from the list and when prompted she unquestioningly started building toward the same happy ending her boyfriend got. You think you have the plausible deniability.

“Bring her in here and ask her what happened if you want proof.” you continue.
