10.2 Oration

To your chagrin, your unwanted run in with Nereus seems to have only further spurred his odd infatuation. This in turn has to lead to an increased effort in his canvassing. You're quite alarmed to hear word of his popularity growing as the election draws near. Nevertheless, you refuse to lose hope or give into resignation. When the day in question arrives you find yourself uncharacteristically calm. The weather is gloomy and cold yet does not put a damper on your peaceful spirit. Even Nereus' sharp, dark gaze fails to elicit any meaningful response. The only time you feel your nerves waiver is when you finally step before the large crowd that has gathered. Both opponents have already made their addressal, though you had been far too distracted to take note. Placidly, you greet your subjects as you realize there is little you can say.

You are no warrior like Nereus nor headstrong liberal such as Kyros. Deciding this is of little consequence, you look down while exhaling deeply. After a moment of reflection, your gaze returns to the restless group before you. Instead of boring them with the typical promises of peace and prosperity, you take a different approach. As your mind drifts back through the many scrolls you've poured over one in particular stands out. Though at first it seems strange, the parable which you recite is oddly fitting for the situation. A tale of a captive bird who repeatedly chooses to return to its cruel master despite many opportunities of escape. The audience seems oddly captivated by the simple and fairly well known fable. When you reach its inevitable conclusion, ending with the preventable **** of the bird, you know you have them in your snare.

It takes little guidance in leading them towards your hardly subtle comparison. You're unsure whether it is imagined or not but you believe you catch a shift in the crowd's demeanor when you've finished. The harsh wind around has grown increasingly cold, adding to the now dark tone. Nereus' eyes you with a mix of irritation and what could be mistaken for admiration as you descend the stage. Doing your best to ignore him, you chose to return home almost immediately. Though it is customary to stay and mingle with the citizens, you do not deem it worth the risk. Taking safe haven in your stead, you can only imagine the repercussions should your ploy become fortuitous.
