Chapter 5 by EfonSanguinbull EfonSanguinbull

How do I react?

015. Explain about the obelisk.

"No, you don't understand," I started, but Kouki didn't want to hear anything I had to say.

"Just… never mind," she said clearly not wanting to talk and still sore about me peeping on her earlier in the day. "Eat your dinner. I'm going to bed." With that, she turned her back on me and started to undress. I turned away as I always had and picked up the mildly appetizing mush of rice and corn we always ate every day. Of course, I was so hungry I quickly scarfed down the meager portion while Kouki got into her bed. Once I was finished I too removed my worn and tattered clothes then slunk into bed as well.

I blew out the candle, but the moonlight was quite bright tonight being almost full. I didn't look back at Kouki until I heard her soft breathing snore echo through our small home. I tried to go to sleep, but I just couldn't stop thinking about all the crazy stuff that happened to me today. I replayed everything over and over in my head, especially the strange fact that my name had been etched on that obelisk this whole time, for how many hundreds of years, and I never knew it.

I vowed then to try and spend some time to help that strange monk clean up the ancient stone temple. Maybe there was more writing around to tell of some ancient ancestor of mine and why he was honored so. Maybe he was a great warrior, a hero of his age. As I faded to sleep I smiled thinking about the cheers and greatness of being a war hero and imagined I was on the front with our army, facing the barbarian horde invading far to the north.
