You start to fiddle with it. Turning things and shifting things and moving things around. It is not long before your patience wears thin. You were getting nowhere! Worse than nowhere, you were making a mess of it. The kinked chains and loose fitting gears now looked beyond all hope.

In your frustration you pull a dagger from your belt prying and twisting at the mechanisms. Not in a bid to solve the puzzle but just for sheer destructive vandalism. Fuck this stupid puzzle pillar.

It would be your last mistake. At one point you stab in under a particular cogwheel to feel the tip of your dagger pierce something a bit softer than the rest.

A sharp buzzing sound is instantly followed by a magical jolt that runs through the dagger and up your arm. The crackling energy grips your major organs and fries them to ash.
