(Mage only) Threaten her.

You look around and weigh up your chances. This was a mighty foe. This was her lair. She had all of the advantages here. She knew the terrain, she didn't stick to her own webs, and she could move in three dimensions thanks to her spider climbing abilities. To top it off, while you knew that her webbing would be easy to contend with, adult Deep Widow's themselves were infamously resistant to magic. Fighting her like this, at this range, was a fools errand.

It dawns on you then that you didn't actually need to fight her. You just needed the emerald.

You think. You think. She might be resistant to magic but....but....YES!

Your eyes spin quickly over to the cocoon of the fighter you noticed a bit ago. You were pretty sure the person was dead but...you squint to make out details in the dim light...it didn't appear that anything had burrowed its way out of him yet. There may still be eggs within that body! The adults might be magically resistant, the babies however were quite fragile.

You bring magical flame to light in both your hands. The web instantly burns from your stuck palm. The room suddenly brightens from the arcane fire that burned around your hands.

"He he he he!" Her ice cold laugh pierces your soul. "That's it magic mannnnn. Burnnnn me!"

You hold out your right hand, not to her but toward the corpse of that fallen adventurer. Her smile is wiped from her face and her eyes widen in horror. "NO!"

She goes to move to shield her young but you stare her down. "Stop! One more step and they die!"

She lets out a hiss of rage and snarls at you. "Foolish morsellll!"

"Morsel no more it seems. We don't need any trouble between us. You give me the gem and I let your babies live."

She glances desperately between you and her gestating brood. Her face is a mask of maternal worry and fury.

She finally spits at you and growls a clicky growl. "I...I have you! I willll make morrre babiessss."

You had been expecting that. You bring your other fiery hand and carefully point it at your own head.

"I would rather die than let that happen!" You say. "I will shoot both at once. Your babies and your mate both gone in a flash. I can't assume you get many potential mates where you live. Am I right?"

You could see on her twisting conflicted face that you were. She looks back and forth, weighing up her options, before finally her shoulders slump and her head dips in defeat. "Don't hurt myyy babiesss. Please."

"Throw me the gem and turn around." You tell her.

She does as instructed. Reaching behind her she produces the emerald and tosses it your way, it lands at your feet. True to her word she turns around. "Please. No tricks magic mannnn."

You snuff the flame from your left hand and quickly pocket the gem.

You then reignite that hand and send forth a gout of flame to clear your way to the exit you wished to leave by. You then point it back at your head.

You carefully make your way to the exit. One hand pointing to the body, the other to your head.

"Please magic mannnn. No tricks, no trickssss." She pleads.

You almost hated to do it...but Deep Widows were far too dangerous to your kind for you to have mercy on them. Just before stepping from the room you point both hands toward the cocooned body and blast it with a double stream of red hot magical flame. It is consumed in seconds.

"NOOOOOO!!!" The spider woman screeches in rage and despair. She spins to look at you with a hatred beyond any you had experienced before. "NOOOOOO!!!"

You turn and run through the door.
