“The Help” Leaves

Chapter 20 by mrdarcydoms mrdarcydoms

Moira set the duster down on the mantel with careful precision.

“I’ll finish the upstairs later,” she said, voice even. “Dr. Harmon asked me to check the linens in the guest room first.” Her eyes flicked once to Constance, then to me. “Unless you need anything else, Mrs. Harmon.”

“No,” I answered. “Go.”

She inclined her head and left the living room without hurry, footsteps light on the stairs. The house seemed to track her progress until a door closed softly above us.

Constance waited until the sound faded. Then she turned the full weight of her attention on me.

“Well,” she said, low and amused. “That one didn’t waste any time making herself at home. How long has she been coming here, darlin’?”

I crossed my arms, still standing near the door. “According to Ben, since Tuesday. According to me, she walked in this morning like she’d always had a key.”

Constance’s eyebrows rose. She picked up the fresh sage bundle again, turning it slowly between her fingers. “And you believe him?”

“I don’t know what I believe anymore.” The residual ache between my legs and the memory of the black silicone upstairs made the admission taste bitter. “He acts like she’s part of the furniture. She acts like she owns the dust. And she found… things. Things I never put in this house.”

Constance’s gaze sharpened with interest. “Things?”

I didn’t elaborate. The three black shapes on my nightstand felt suddenly like a secret the walls themselves were listening for.

Constance stepped closer, the sage still in her hand. Her voice dropped.

“Moira O’Hara has a long history with this place. Longer than your husband realizes. She doesn’t just clean. She collects. She watches. And she has a particular talent for making men see exactly what they want to see while the rest of us get the truth.” She tilted her head. “Has Ben looked at her the way men tend to look at her?”

The question landed like a small, precise blade. I thought of the half-second Ben’s eyes had followed the hem of that short black dress.

“Yes,” I said.

Constance smiled, slow and dark. “Then you’d better decide quickly whether she’s help… or competition. Or something the house sent to keep you off-balance while it finishes what it started the night I first walked into your kitchen.”

She held the sage out to me.

“Burn this one tonight. In the bedroom. And keep the door unlocked again.”

Her eyes held mine, knowing and patient, while upstairs the low murmur of Ben’s voice continued and the house waited to see which of us would move first.
