Bruce's face sang with transcendent joy. "Yes!" He cried going to one knee to take the ring, but Amelia's was contorted in rage...

"NO!" She exclaimed and moved as though to slap her ring, (a sapphire and pearl number you'd taken from a French ship two or three months ago,) from your hand, but Bruce looks at her almost like a lost puppy that she just kicked for no real reason, not even pure spite or carelessness, and she can't help but waiver. "Maybe?" Amelia says after starring into those milk-chocolate drowning pools which are Bruce's eyes for ten or fifteen seconds.

"What do you mean 'Maybe' lover?" You ask, voice gentle and quiet, careful not to disturb whatever emotional whami Bruce is using on your girlfriend who you want to promote to fiancee status.

"I, uh, I don't..." Amelia stammers, then, takes a deep breath to steady herself, and continues more normally. "Okay, look: I'm sure he's an okay guy and all, but I've only gone on one voyage with him and our spheres were pretty separate during that voyage. Can we at least, like, go on a few dates as a Triad before we make any lifetime commitments? I'm not saying 'no': ok, I did say 'No' at first but I've reassessed that decision, I'm saying, 'maybe' like I need more time and especially information to think about this... Ælfhild, I love you, you know that, but this is very sudden. When I said that stuff about getting down on one knee with a ring a few weeks before we made port I didn't realize you were taking me seriously! Of course, I should have, it's not like it sounded like a joke, but, I'm not sure I'm ready, for any of this..." Amelia explains.
