You were born and raised on Earth, the homeworld of humanity, and this has shaped you.

You believed in the dictates of the "United Earth Directorate" the way some people believe in God, so of course you signed up for the UED Marines. You did well in that job for a while; so well that you were chosen to serve as a sergeant in the UED Marine Corps Expeditionary Force that was being dispatched to conquer the wayward Koprulu Sector.

The expedition was a total boondoggle from the start.

You had been sent with everything you might need to defeat the backwards local humans, and crush the 'Zerg' threat once and for all, whatever the hell a 'Zerg' was.

Through mismanagement and arrogance on the part of the invasion's leadership, almost the entire expedition was wiped out by "Sarah Kerrigan: the Queen of Blades"...

You saw a lot of good men and women die in that long and vicious fight, and it broke your faith: faith in the UED, faith in the Corps, faith in your gear, faith in your abilities.

The two things it didn't break was your faith in Humanity, and your faith in your squad. You're not quite sure how your transport managed to get free of the main fleet while Kerrigan's monsters were attacking, but it did, and you made the jump to hyperspace without full calculation due to a small hive fleet on your tails.

You emerged from the jump within the gravity well of this bass-ackwards dirtball which your coms systems hear is called "Patch of Heaven", and the transport ship crashed. Out of the 100 or so marines on board only you and your squad survive as far as you know, having decided to risk a HALO insertion into unknown territory rather than count on the pilots to succeed at getting the controls to respond in time. You saw the ship hit, so your pretty sure everybody else is dead, it's just you and your squad, on an uncharted and probably hostile planet...
