Chapter 11 by MidbossMan MidbossMan

What will you do?

(Grill) Press her on who here might be Yara's enemy

Right now, you were fishing for connections between the guests. Yara had offered some thoughts about the others, but in your mind, she seemed interested first and foremost in covering her own ass, even if it meant throwing others under the bus. In other words, she was a bull-shitter. Brunhilde was not... therefore, you needed her perspective.

You asked her who on the island might have some sort of grudge against Yara. If Wanda was the first target, Yara might be the second. If Yara needed a bodyguard, she must have enemies.

"A grudge? Yara has no enemies. At least, none who aren't in hospital beds, eating their meals through straws! Ha. You'll be next, if you pester me or her with questions."

You weren't going to accept that answer. It was clear to you that Brunhilde wasn't taking you seriously, so you matched her expression, pocketing your notebook so that you could cross your arms and tilt your chin up in the same standoffish way she was facing you. If she didn't want to speak with words, then you'd try things her way.

In response, she dropped her fists to her sides and stepped closer, standing square with you and nearly touching her face to your own. Her intense stare down seemed like it froze time on the little island. You were so close that you could smell her perfume, crisp and cool-- or maybe it was her deodorant, she didn't seem like the perfume type. You could see the corner underneath one eye twitch as she watched your own eyes, unblinking.

Finally, when she'd tested your mettle to her satisfaction, she drew back, smiling and raising one finger. "I like you. You do not waste time with words and laughter. You are not so... 'civilized' as the rest of our company. Perhaps we can get along," she conceded. "A taste of back home."

You asked her again: so she was fond of home after all?

Her smile faded again. "That is not the topic I wish to discuss. We were speaking of Yara's enemies. If there is one here, it is that other detective: Dee." She rolled her neck, as though popping her muscles. "A bit like you. Headstrong. Full of conviction. Not unpleasant to talk to. But for whatever reason, she hates magicians of all kinds, especially those cunning ones like the lady of the house. She considers Yara to be the same way. I tried to convince her that's all a bunch of rubbish, but she has an earnest fear of them... Yes, a strong distaste indeed. It is funny-- in many ways, I am like her, but where I reject all things magical, she seems thoroughly convinced of them." The woman clicked her teeth, narrowing her eyes again and making a sour expression.

That sounded like some useful information. You were actually less concerned with how it might apply to Yara and more about how it might inform her motivations as a culprit against Wanda. You thanked Brunhilde for her cooperation.

"Hmph. There you go with platitudes again. Thank me by making sure that Yara stays out of everyone's suspicions on this matter. It will make my job easier." She continued to look past you, but she did give you a nod with a swish of the long bangs nearly covering one of her eyes. "At least you are a serious detective, Malcolm. If you are putting business first, then I will try to trust you."

You accepted that-- being careful not to thank her again-- and allowed her to return to Yara's side. Now there was just one woman left to confront here on the island: the much discussed Dee Langley.
