Chapter 11 by MidbossMan MidbossMan

What will you do?

(Gossip) Soften her up by talking about her boss

Brunhilde didn't seem to be in a hurry to tell you about her favorite foods or her hobbies. There was only one subject she clearly responded to: her master. You thought that if anything was going to endear Brunhilde to you, it was probably that one subject. You asked what Yara had done that had inspired Brunhilde to leave her old life and serve her so faithfully.

"What did she do? Have very deep pockets and a penchant for traveling to dangerous places. It is not that complicated," the other woman answered, rolling her eyes. "It's easy money. Yara doesn't get into trouble as much as she likes to pretend she does. Sometimes, I think I'm just around for the mystique of having a blond bitch that's over 6 feet tall protecting her."

It was a bit less exciting of an answer than you'd hoped, but it was fairly informative. She stopped pretty quickly, though, becoming her cold and clammy self once again. You needed another question to draw more out. You asked what she needed all that money for.

Silence.

That question was more about Brunhilde than Yara. You tried again: did Yara and Brunhilde ever argue about her collection? Yara clearly believed in the veracity of her magical items, but Brunhilde was just the opposite.

"She doesn't pay me to argue. But it doesn't rattle her either. She's always trying to convince me, but she knows she never will. I'm not going to bother trying to convince her any more, but I will say what I think to her stupid, gap-toothed face. Or anyone else's, for that matter. I am not afraid to say it directly to Wanda Croft."

You kept going: would Brunhilde call Yara that to her face? Stupid and gap-toothed?

"Yeah, I would. I'll call you stupid too, if you keep wasting my time with these questions. All these questions about Yara... do you suspect her too? Are you trying to pin this on her?" Brunhilde questioned, pushing off the wall and tilting her head slightly to the side. "You don't have authority here, detective. I won't let you do anything that jeopardizes Yara."

You backed up and raised your hands, reassuring her with your words that you weren't trying to pin anything on anyone. Everyone was getting questions tonight.

"Good luck to you, then. Yara and I are done answering questions, so you can spend the rest of the night wasting the time of all the others. Go yap to the butler." She pantomimed a talking dog with one hand, then smirked at you, daring you to bark back at her.

Charming.

You weren't getting much out of Brunhilde and certainly weren't warming her up to you. If anything, she seemed to see you as a nuisance for her employer and thereby made her shit list. You decided to take off and look for the final guest before you put your foot any further into your mouth.
