"What the hell happened?"

"What the hell happened, John?"

The simple question was, at first, met only by silence. The boy focused on the road ahead, trying his best to ignore the question, in hopes that it might simply go away. Doe's frosty yet inquisitive stare, however, made no signs of wavering. She wanted an answer and wasn't going to let up until he gave her one. After all, how often does one see their father fly 8 feet back across their own front yard, without anyone ever touching them?

"So where do you wanna go? Plenty of places t-"

"Stop avoiding the question, John. What the hell was that back there?"

With a sigh and a shake of the head, he decided at last to indulge her. It was better than having her anger **** upon him, at any rate. "You really want to know? It's not exactly believable."

Doe's eyes sunk and lips pursed- why was he acting like this? Her voice, though soft, would hold a definite seriousness to it, mingled with calming sincerity. "Chris, my best friend was just kidnapped for a week." She paused, obviously referring to him. A glance over at her confirmed her her sorrowful stare, and a small pang of warmth burst from his heart...though he felt a familiar something stirring below as well. "My father's an asshole- I can't take my best friend being distant." Her lips curled into the slightest hint of a smile, and then she gestured towards a dirt pull-off on the side of the road. "Pull over here and tell me what's up, ok?"

John, not being one to argue, quickly heeded her request and pulled the car over to the side of the road, and plopped the car in park. Turning off the ignition, he redirected his attentions on his friend, and sighed. What would he say? What would he do? She, however, simply stared, waiting.
