What's next?
"The Younger Sister"
Evan had already spent an entire day at Brooke’s house, trapped between the walls of the room she had assigned him to rest, still exhausted from the flu and the confusion that had taken over his mind. The injections Brooke was giving him seemed to do nothing but worsen his condition: they gave him a constant headache and a feeling of weakness that made him feel like he was floating, dragged by an unstoppable current of drowsiness. The "vitamins," as Brooke called them, weren’t helping him recover at all.
"You’ll see, in a couple of days you’ll be as good as new, little sister," Brooke had told him that morning, looking at him with a smile that might have seemed warm if it hadn’t been for the way the word little sister echoed in his head. Evan hadn’t dared to say anything. After all, it had been him who, jokingly, had mentioned being her “younger sister.” He thought it was just an innocent comment to lighten the situation, but he hadn’t counted on Brooke apparently taking it so seriously.
So here he was, trapped in a bubble of discomfort that seemed endless. He was tired of feeling like a little child, but Brooke had turned him into one. After the injections, he felt even weaker, more ****, and those strange sensations he couldn’t clearly identify tormented him. It seemed that no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t escape from his own body. The jokes didn’t help, and Brooke, with her protective attitude, seemed to think that he really was her little sister, as if she had forgotten that he had always been a boy.
Evan’s frustration grew with every passing minute. The idea of being locked in that room, doing nothing but sleeping, taking Brooke’s vitamins, and being treated like a little kid was driving him crazy. But what irritated him the most was that Brooke had gone further and hidden his phone, telling him he couldn’t be connected to the outside world while recovering. Recovering from what? A simple flu!
As if that weren’t enough, Brooke **** him to watch television. The afternoon programming was nothing less than cartoons. Maybe for a little girl, but for him… definitely not. He couldn’t stand it. "I feel so stupid," he thought.
“Do you really think this is going to help me feel better?” he thought while watching the cartoons with a mix of annoyance and confusion. Every time he tried to get up, he could feel Brooke’s eyes on him, watching every move as if he were a baby incapable of taking care of himself. She didn’t even let him go to the bathroom without accompanying him!
“It’s for your own good, little sister. Don’t worry, I’m taking care of you,” Brooke said with that motherly smile that made his skin crawl.
Evan lay back on the pillow with an exasperated sigh. He decided the best thing was to stop fighting. At this rate, all he could do was wait for those damn three days to pass and recover. Nothing more than rest. The sooner he got out of there, the better. Hopefully, Brooke wouldn’t treat him like this for much longer, but for now, there wasn’t much he could do. He was trapped, at least for a couple more days.
Meanwhile, at school, Kyle was going through a completely different situation. Since Evan hadn’t shown up for class, he had felt strange, like something was happening that he couldn’t fully explain. Sometimes, when he thought about him, he felt a kind of warmth on his cheeks, something that made him uncomfortable. It wasn’t something he could ignore.
“What’s wrong with me?” he said to himself, tapping his head lightly as if that could erase the warmth building up on his face when he thought about Evan. He didn’t understand what was going on. They had always been friends. But now, with Evan’s absence, he was starting to think about him in a different way, a way he couldn’t describe with words. He remembered how he had seen Evan that first day with that somewhat more feminine shirt, and how, unconsciously, his mind was beginning to look for explanations he didn’t have.
One afternoon, while scrolling through some photos on his phone, he came across a picture of Evan in his gallery, one he had taken without thinking too much about it. It was one of those spontaneous photos of his friend, taken without warning, while they were laughing in the park. At that moment, it had just been a quick snapshot, but now, looking at it, he couldn’t help but think about it in a way that made him feel even more uncomfortable.
“Why…?” he whispered, his finger slowly sliding across the screen, looking at the image of Evan smiling. It wasn’t anything extraordinary, but the way his friend had changed, even if just a little, was starting to unsettle him. The image felt different. As if something had changed without him even realizing it.
