Jane seems a little disappointed in your answer, but quickly sits back down and regains her half smile that she had donned earlier. She continues to lock stares with you and says, “While I can not demonstrate any of my skills today I can assure you that I have received the best training to meet any needs you might have of me as a servant. I can also answer any questions you might have. Feel free to ask me whatever you might have in mind.”

You can tell from her voice that she has suddenly become nervous, maybe even as nervous as you. Your mind suddenly brings up images of two cogs in a machine. If you do not select her, there will be other servants to chose from just as there will be other caregivers that could choose her, but selecting her now would end the wait and the anticipation for both of you. This is merely a sidebar for your life, but for her, her entire life so far hangs on the axis of your decision. This realization of responsibility does nothing to calm you.

You think of what to say. Many questions come to mind but at the same time you feel like you would be justified in asking none and making your decision right away.
