Chapter 17 by Alexleigh Alexleigh

What's next?

"A Wraith! Die!" Emalie screams.

Lunging to physically restrain Emalie, you barely manage to stop her from throwing a chair at the mirror.

After a minor - but still quite lengthy - explanation, she seems a little more comfortable with the idea of mirrors showing reflections that... aren't reflections. When asked why you never mentioned those other mirrors, doing the same, you reply, "You never asked?"

"We shouldn't need to ask for you to share stuff like this!" Emalie half-shouts at you. "Come on, it's a talking mirror, that seems pretty important to share!? Frick, spooked me so bad I could, like, feel my heart trying to tear its way out of my chest." She reclines on an office chair, further sinking into the surprisingly comfortable seats.

"It's called a television, ma'am." Rolph's cheery voice sings from a hidden speaker somewhere. "A screen, a Tee Vee, a prompter, or even known coequally as a funny box to some."

Em side-eyes you suspiciously. Is she suspicious of you? God, what did you do wrong now!? Just because you're being contrasted to the single most trust-worthy entity in all of excistance, Em suddenly sees you for what you truly are. Shady. Criminal. A mite, miting mighty men multiple... What were you thinking about? Something about this Tee Vee is so darn distracting.

"At Pleasure Tech, we use this 'Town Hall' for presentations," Rolph says - possibly to break the awkward silence of Em staring at you and you, just sitting there, sweating and fiddling with your hands. "It's a multi-mediator-mediotorium room. This entire thing is actually one big screen. Our glass walls are actually thousands upon thousands of tiny nanites replicating whatever visual input--"

"So the wall is a Tee Vee," Em interrupts sharply.

"Well, it's much more sophisticated than-"

"I'm sure it is. But, like, my brain only has space for important information. Keep it simple."

Rolph's impeccably trimmed eyebrows furrow in frustration. "It means, sweet heart, that I can do this!" Rolph shoots a rainbow from his hand. As it's about to hit the edge of the Tee Vee it, instead, flies past the confinement of the funny box and continues onwards on the glass wall. It then lands with a splat.

Em is not impressed, despite Rolph's raised eyebrow and well practised smile. You, on the other hand, are about to clap. Slowly now, has to be before Em sees it and- too late. Em gives you a hard look that says, Don't encourage him. You show Em how you weren't about to clap, just... practising your jazz hands. Woah, look at them go! Shaking! Pizazz!

The shattered image of Rolph, a black haired man you can only describe as a jet setter for some reason, turns to you and says, "I should inform you that I am in no way distracting you from anything important when I ask; Why are you naked and what are you doing with your hands?"

You look at Emalie, who gives you a shrug that says, How would I know?

Right, you settle forward in your own chair, not quite sure whether to look at the goopey thing in a jar or Rolph's projection on the Tee Vee.

You settle for both and do what you do best, deflecting. "So, what is this place?" You ask the jar and to the projection you say, "Seems like a lot of people used to live here."

"Yes. That was... A long time ago. I'm not obfuscating the actual amount of years, it seems like the number is simply lost to me. Not trying to hide anything. Unlike you, little Ms Avoidance. Rawr."

There your cheeks go again. Doing the whole searing your face in fire. No, wait, now that you've actually been on fire you can say this isn't actually a very good analogy. Your cheeks blushing really isn't comparable to being burned alive.

"Leave her be, creep," Emalie's voice isn't loud, but for some reason it still feels like she's yelling. "She has her reasons. If a girl wants to, like, flaunt her stuff, that's up to her. It's not an invitation for you make dumb noises at her. Besides, you're a brain in a jar! Technically, you're always naked!"

Rolph, folding his and resting them comfortably in front of him, coolly replies, "You're a very brash young woman. Many, healthy, emotions on display here. You're right. I'm merely following the directive of my programming."

"It's fine, Em," you lie, "Rolph seems like a decent sort of guy."

"Fantastic! I'd hate it if I came across as secretive or deceptive." The image of Rolph laughs, as the goopey thing bumps against the jar roof again. "Or - just imagine - If I accidentality gave you the impression I was stalling for time! Ha! Hilarious! What a notion!"

Dismissively waving her hand, Emalie replies, "We get it. No need to repeat yourself. Answer the fricking question, Rolph. This place is a mess, what happened?"

"Ma'am, if you're insinuating that our working conditions aren't top of the line, and rated the most employee friendly workplace, several years in a row- why, I'd be just almost as hurt if you had deemed me not worthy of your trust!"

"But what happened!?" Emalie almost jumps out of her chair, fist shaking in the air, till she sees your best attempt at puppy eyes. "Aaargh! I can't imagine why someone would preserve this guy! He's impossible!"

"Listen, Rolph. We're just trying to understand. It's a lot to take in, you know?" You make a gesture as if serving a point. "And, it would really, really help our search if you told us what this place is, so we don't accidentally ruin your... Image."

A brief look of terror shoots across Rolph's face, before composing himself. "You! You are a real sweety, you know that, right? Aww, shucks. Fine." Rolph grins, pretending to be charmed, and continues, "I'll give you the whole tour, just like in the old days!"

You both nod. One more angrily than the other.

"Amazing." Rolph walks off the screen, leaving an endlessly white horizon in his absence. Not satisfied being contained to the television, the whiteness pours out onto and into the glass cage. Suddenly, you're no longer surrounded by a grim ocean of squaribles, but treated to a vista of endless wheat fields.

"Welcome." Rolph's disjointed voice speaks in calm tone. A hand weaves through the wheat, the unseen observer following right behind. "Welcome home."

Wheat fields fade away to a scene of people milling about some squaribles. Looking closer, it's actually the same as those outside. Man, if people hadn't died, this would be a really nice visual effect. Some of the people can be seen talking, others sitting at their desks, all smiling and laughing.

As this is happening, Rolph's soothing voice keeps presenting. "Pleasure Tech isn't just a place you work it's a place you breathe." A man leans over the shoulder of a woman, sitting at her desk, a screen in front of her, out of your sight. They booth look very serious, as the man points at something on the screen and the woman nods.

"We employ only the select few. The best of the best. Those of you today, around this table, are among those." The scene fades into a bunch of young people wearing black robes and weird looking triangles on their head. They all look proud. "You might be given the unique possibility of assisting humanity in a bright, sunny future, should you be selected after this interview."

"You might know our parent conglomerate and the rumours of..." Images around you fade in and out of each other slowly. A dark, furious river flowing from a giant cement tube. Obese men in suits, shaking hands. A flat bag, of sorts, being opened and turning around to reveal stacks of green rectangles. "Pollution. Corruption. Bribery. We can't deny any of those. Why would we? Would that really change your mind? So, I ask you, why would we waste our time dismissing baseless rumours when there's much, much more important things we need to get done. Out there. In the real world."

The scene around you fades into blinding white light as Rolph's voice turns sombre goes on. "Hand in hand, we improve the lives of trillions around our globe." Light fades and a kid's face fills the screen in front of you and, as the observer pulls back revealing a reddish desert landscape surrounding him, you see how thin and frail the kid is. But he looks happy.

Probably because of what's happening behind him. Men in workers-overall carrying building material. Someone is cracking their back, looking tired and stressed, but smiles when a - Wait, is that PR073-C70R? No. It's much bulkier and looks... manlier? Why? What's the point of that?

Despite your thoughts, the robot gently moves the tired man away and replaces him, hauling the girder on it's shoulder. As the robot walks into the sunset, the screen fades to black, leaving you lost in the great big empty darkness.

"That's why we keep those generous donations rolling, so those less fortunate knows..." Rolph walks back on screen, just a dot standing in complete and utter darkness.

His voice is no longer sombre. It's sharp, bordering on almost angry. Angry at the injustice of his world, as he renounces them, proclaiming, "They are not alone." From underneath him, colour creeps back into the world, revealing a large entrance hall with a facade of glass. A huge crowd of people have gathered around Rolph.

"...Here at Pleasure Tech we believe mankind's future isn't in the hands of the few." Rolph locks hands with the people next to him, and they do the same to those closest. Before long, the whole crowd is holding hands.

"We're in this together." Rolph is energetically preaching, shouting like he believes all dreams can be achieved, yes, even yours!

"No one man is an island. No one woman, a lone spinster, weaving the fabric of life itself. You are not alone!"

"When you are in your darkest hour. When everything seems impossible. You will Succeed. Pleasure Tech is there. We are there!" Rolph nods to the man which hand he's holding, and the man nods and smiles back. He repeats this with the woman on his opposite side. "It. Will. Be. Fine."

Rolph and the crowd jump in unison, an explosion of motion and colour, all shouting, "We Got This!"

Then the screen goes dark.
