Chapter 31
by Impregmaniac
Why?
"...Not interested."
"Not interested?" I repeated, cocking my head to the side, "what do you mean by that?"
He merely shrugged. "I mean 'not interested'. Like I say, don't cause trouble, don't bring trouble."
My brow furrowed. How was this man supposedly immune to the 'charms' that this place had? I pressed further."Uh, alright... forgive me for asking, but from what I understand, the people here can approach each other and... enjoy each other's company." He raised an eyebrow and nodded. "Are you saying that... when you approach someone, they... decline your advances?"
He blinked at me and moved his chin from side to side. "...No. I do not approach people."
"Would that mean that, you decline their advances?"
"...Yes."
"Men and Women?"
"Yes."
"Because you're not interested?"
"Yes."
By this time, I was scratching my head in confusion. I could not draw any sort of conclusion from these single word answers. Nor did he seem inclined to provide any more. "Mr. Chloros, I'm afraid I do not understand. You seem to be completely turned away from Sex, yet the place you currently reside in is overflowing with it. What possible reason do you have for staying here?"
He let out a great sigh. "Because I don't want to marry." I blinked dumbly at him, and I believe that the only reason he spoke more, was to be rid of me. "Back in my home country, I was one of ten children. All boys. And all my brothers, getting married, and having difficult wives. Always with the parents pestering about 'Where my grandchildren? Why you no have daughter yet?'. Feh!" He turned and spat on the ground once more. "I do not want this. So I come here. Where headman says, you bother no one, no one bother you. I take you because you want new life." His tone shifted to one of annoyance, and he continued. "But they still ask anyway. And when I say no, they ask again next day, until finally they give up."
Looking over his shoulder, he nodded over to another man, who was busy hewing a log. "The foreman there, he don't care also. All he care, is work being done. All I care? Get paid." Shouldering his Axe, he sniffed at me. "Now, any more questions? Or can I go back to work and get paid?"
Any other questions?
Madosin.
A voyeur's tale.
The journals of Devon Mckay, the only outsider to ever enter and leave the commune of Madosin, have been found. And what stories they hold. Cover image credited to https://pixabay.com/photos/still-life-candle-book-vintage-5347677/
