The air in the building hung heavy, typical of a humid mid-August heatwave in the non-air conditioned dorms. The bustling hall was full of incoming freshmen, rife with the pungent scent of sweating students and fresh floor wax. Classic move-in day at Woodhaven College. Mark pushed up the stairs carrying a suitcase and a heavy backpack. The elevator's out-of-order status did little to dampen his excitement.
Most freshmen were probably excited to finally be free. He chuckled at the thought. Mark wasn't like most freshmen. He was born with an ability to influence people. With a small nudge and a few carefully chosen words, he could make an idea settle in someone's mind like it had always been there.
He'd only ever done small things, like convincing a teacher to grade his papers a bit more leniently, or getting an extra helping of fries at the lunch counter. That was as far as he’d dared take it. Anything more risked drawing suspicion, which he avoided at all costs. But now he was off in a new city, starting college, in an environment where everyone is expected to act differently and try new things.
He was finally in a position to push it further.
He soon reached his section of the third floor, White Oak Hall, and proceeded to wander through the corridor searching for his room. Stepping up to the door marked 304, Mark adjusted his grip on his suitcase and pulled his keycard from his pocket. He waved the card in front of the scanner, hearing the door unlatch with a satisfying mechanical clack, and swung the door open. Inside, the room was bathed in the warm mid-morning light filtering through the open curtains, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Boxes were stacked precariously against the walls, and on the bed facing the window, a girl in a gray tank top was wrestling a suitcase into a small closet space. She looked up, blinking as Mark stepped into the threshold, his presence breaking her focus. She paused and let go of her suitcase, causing it to topple sideways.
She stood there, her dark hair pulled back in a messy bun that looked like it had survived an overnight drive. For a moment, they locked eyes, and Mark noted the sharpness of her gaze. She seemed intelligent, alert, and somewhat surprised at the unexpected entrance. Mark smiled, attempting to project a polite calmness, and stepped forward into the room. He set his luggage and backpack down, his shoulders relieved of the load he'd carried up three flights of stairs.
"This is room 304, right? White Oak Hall?" Mark asked, wondering if he was lost. The look on her face suggested otherwise.
The girl stepped forward to get a better look at the room assignment slip he was holding. "That's what I thought," she said, her voice dropping slightly, betraying her uncertainty. "The dorm coordinator gave me a slip, and I checked the map outside... but the map was taped with the wrong letters." She gestured vaguely toward the door, then turned to search the floor near the trash bin where she had dropped her paperwork. "This means... wait, hold on." The door, no longer held open, slowly came to a natural close.
Mark watched her scramble for the paper. Wouldn't it be funny if we're actually assigned to the same room, Mark thought, still believing one of them had made an error in locating their room. But why would my card unlock the door if this wasn't the right room? If it was real, it was likely just a clerical error from the mad rush of late room assignment requests.
The girl had finally pulled and flattened the now-wrinkled sheet of paper. They compared the assignment slips side by side; it was undeniably identical apart from their names. The girl, Sophie, stared at the papers for a few more seconds. Then she glanced at the empty twin bed opposite hers, before finally turning her attention back to Mark with wide, dark eyes.
"We... we're sharing? Like, one room?" she asked timidly, the quiet luster of her words seeming to belie her previous confident self.
Mark looked around the empty side of the room; there were no other suitcases, no other people. It was just the two of them. The administration had made a mistake, clearly, but this presented the perfect opportunity. This finally could allow him to let his powers loose. Who better a test subject than someone he could monitor in a private environment all semester long?
Mark needed to act quickly, before she ran off to get this fixed. He decided to start with what he practiced on his old teachers, a gentle suggestion of an idea she would hopefully think was her own.
"That could be fun, though." Mark spoke, his voice carrying a disarming yet suggestive undertone. "College is supposed to be all about trying new experiences, how would a coed room be any different?" He held his breath, unsure how well it would work. Having never met this girl before, he had no idea how susceptible she might be.
The effect was subtle, like a gentle brush against her mind. Sophie blinked, her shoulders dropping noticeably as she absorbed his words. The tension she was holding seemed to melt as she let her slightly defensive posture loosen. "Interesting new experience," she murmured, though she was looking at the floor.
Mark relaxed as he noticed this change in posture. Sophie looked up at Mark, any remaining wariness replaced by open curiosity. All urgency at resolving the room situation having completely left. Instead, she nodded. A slow, deliberate nod that suggested she was agreeing with herself rather than just him. "It's not going to be a disaster, is it?" she asked, this time in a joking tone of voice.
"Not if we don't make it one," Mark replied, chuckling along with Sophie. She was malleable, surprisingly so for a stranger he had known for exactly five minutes. The control wasn't absolute yet, nor did he want it to be. Too much of a sudden change might cause skepticism. But the seed was planted: this was a secret, their secret, and it was something to look forward to.
"I'm Mark," he said, offering a handshake to his new roommate.
She looked at his hand for a second before taking it. "Sophie," she responded.
They shook, the contact lingering just a second longer than necessary, a silent acknowledgment that the dynamic had shifted from two strangers to two conspirators. The air felt different now, charged with the quiet energy of the power he had just exerted. She seemed ready, open enough to walk with him into whatever next step he proposed, free of the anxiety she had possessed only moments before.
"So," Sophie began, turning her attention back to wrestling her fallen suitcase back into the closet. "Since we're sticking with this... coffee? To get to know each other ?" The suggestion entirely hers, but Mark knew the timing was too perfect. She was unconsciously trying to get some space to let the new idea settle in her head. The distraction of a shared activity in a low-stakes environment provided that space.
"Sounds like a good idea." Mark said, wanting to make sure the idea sticks permanently. "There's a cafe down the street. It seems we both had a long journey the past day or so. Caffeine sounds good right about now."
Sophie smiled in response. She quickly went back to putting the last of her clothes into the dresser, leaving the heavy boxes for later. Mark tossed his bags on the remaining bed, not wanting to let unpacking get between him and his precious caffeine. He grabbed only the essentials needed for the coffee run. Mark watched her finish, feeling excitement build. The mistaken room assignment was working out better than anything he'd envisioned.
As they made their way to the main hallway, the door clicked shut behind them. They walked down the stairs and out of the building, the chaos of move-in fading behind them. Sophie walked beside him, the fresh breeze and prospect of coffee putting a bounce in her step. To anyone else, they looked like a pair of good friends leaving campus to explore the city.
What happens at the coffee shop?
