Chapter 1: A Whisper in the Marrow
The heat didn't come from the sun; it came from inside his bones.
Synn Jordan stood in the kitchen of his family’s home, his hand trembling slightly as he gripped a mug of coffee. He was twenty-four, a man of logic and equations, but nothing in his degree prepared him for the sensation of a cold, oily tongue sliding across the inside of his skull.
Finally, a voice whispered—not in his ears, but vibrating through his teeth, a dark velvet purr that made his skin crawl with both dread and an unwanted, sudden electricity. A vessel with such... potential. So much repressed hunger hiding behind those smart eyes.
"Who's there?" Synn muttered, his voice cracking. He looked around the empty kitchen. The morning light seemed to dim, the shadows in the corners stretching like hungry fingers.
I am the answer to the questions you were too afraid to ask, my perfect instrument, the spirit hissed. I am the itch you can’t scratch. And today, Synn... today we begin to play.
The door groaned open, and his mother, Elaine, walked in. Synn froze. Usually, his mother was the picture of suburban decorum, but today she was dressed in a silk nightgown that clung to her curves, the fabric so thin he could see the dark circles of her nipples. She didn't look at him with her usual maternal warmth; her gaze was heavy, hooded, and lingered far too long on the front of his sweatpants.
"Good morning, Synn," she said, her voice a low, honeyed drawl he’d never heard before. She stepped closer, the scent of jasmine and something muskier—something carnal—filling his lungs. "You look... different today. Stronger."
She reached out, her fingers grazing his bicep. Synn’s muscle jumped under her touch. He felt a surge of panic, but the spirit merely chuckled in the back of his mind.
See how they react to the change? I haven't touched her mind, Synn. I've only unchained her desires. She sees the Alpha I am making you. She wants to be ruled by her son.
"Mom, you're... you're showing a lot," Synn stammered, trying to step back.
Elaine didn't pull away. She stepped into his space, her chest nearly brushing his arm. "Is that a problem, Synn? A mother should feel comfortable around her only son, shouldn't she? Especially one as handsome as you."
Synn felt a sickening, powerful throb in his groin. He wasn't thinking these thoughts—he was horrified—but the reality of his mother’s sudden, blatant availability was a physical weight, a temptation that the spirit was using like a lure. The horror was in her normalcy; she acted as if this suggestive, boundary-breaking behavior was the most natural thing in the world. And as he looked at her, he realized he wasn't just imagining it: he was taller, his shoulders were wider, and the air between them was thick with a heavy, erotic charge that promised to consume everything he knew.
What's next?
Synn Jordan is an ordinary black man living an ordinary life — until the night a nameless spirit crawls inside his skull and makes itself at home. It whispers. It reshapes. It hungers. The world around him begins to warp in ways only he can perceive: people change, inhibitions dissolve, and reality bends toward depravity. The spirit feeds on corruption, and it has chosen Synn as its instrument. No one else notices. No one else remembers how things were before.
