The Price of Public Opinion
Chapter 1
Chapter 1

A week ago, I make the mistake of asking Layla Laurent out.
Not because I think she’ll actually say yes. Nobody expects Layla Laurent to say yes to anyone. She’s the rich, beautiful, untouchable girl every guy at school wants.
It’s the second semester of my senior year of high school, and I just think I should shoot my shot. I just figure the worst she can do is reject me.
Instead, she humiliates me.
She laughs directly in my face. Loudly. Then she asks, “Wait… are you actually serious?”
People stop and stare. Phones come out. Someone starts recording before I even fully realize what’s happening.
By the end of the day, the video is everywhere.
By the end of the week, everyone at school knows exactly how pathetic Layla Laurent thinks I am.
Now she’s standing in front of me after school.
The hallway is nearly empty, washed in the dull orange glow of the setting sun filtering through the tall windows. For once, Layla doesn’t look confident. Her arms are folded tightly beneath her chest, fingers digging into the sleeves of her expensive coat as she glances nervously around the hallway.
“Can we talk somewhere private?” she asks quietly.
A few minutes later, we’re alone in an empty classroom.
The silence feels heavy.
Layla stands near the teacher’s desk, shifting uncomfortably in her heels. She avoids my eyes for several long seconds before finally forcing herself to speak.
“…I need your help.”
The words clearly wound her pride.
“That video became a huge problem,” she says. “My college acceptance is being reviewed because of it. Scholarships too.”
She exhales shakily and brushes a strand of dark hair behind her ear.
“My parents are freaking out. The school’s freaking out. Apparently everybody suddenly cares about bullying now.”
A bitter laugh escapes her before she finally looks at me.
“And the only person who can fix this… is you.”
The room falls silent again.
“If people see us together—if they think you forgave me—this whole thing probably goes away.”
Layla swallows hard. Even now, I can see how much it hurts her to say the next part.
“So… I’ll do whatever you want for one week.”
She hesitates.
“…Including being your girlfriend.”
“No.”
Layla blinks rapidly, stunned by my immediate refusal.
For a brief moment, genuine shock flashes across her beautiful face. Then it hardens into cold fury.
“I… excuse me?” she hisses through clenched teeth. “Did you really just say no to me? To me?”
She steps closer, her heels clicking sharply against the tile floor.
“You should feel honored I’m even considering this option. Do you have any idea how many guys would kill to be in your position right now?”
Her hands clench into fists at her sides, knuckles whitening with tension.
“No, and I don’t care, Layla. Do you even know my name?”
Her eyes widen slightly.
A flicker of uncertainty crosses her face before indignation quickly replaces it.
“Of course I know your name,” she scoffs, though the hesitation in her voice betrays her immediately. “I just… I don’t see why it matters. The point is, I’m offering you an opportunity here.”
She steps closer again, invading my personal space. Her expensive perfume hangs thick in the air between us.
“And trust me,” she says softly, “not caring is a luxury you can’t afford right now.”
“My future?” I ask. “Mine?”
I let out a quiet laugh and shake my head.
“It sounds like your future is the one falling apart right now, Layla. I didn’t have much of one to begin with. I’m exactly where I started.”
Her jaw tightens.
“You rejecting me was always the most likely outcome. I knew that. I just thought…” I shrug weakly. “I thought I’d give it a shot. It’s senior year, and you’re beautiful.”
Layla’s expression falters slightly.
“My mistake was thinking you were kind too. Or caring. Or compassionate.”
She looks away.
“For you to reject me the way you did—publicly, cruelly, like I was some joke—that goes beyond being mean. It was disgusting.”
The classroom grows painfully quiet.
“And honestly?” I continue. “It didn’t even hurt me as much as you probably hoped it would. It just made me realize the version of you I liked never actually existed.”
Layla stares at me silently.
“I stopped loving you—or the idea of you—the second you laughed at me.”
A long pause stretches between us.
“That’s all I lost,” I say. “Meanwhile, you might lose college acceptances, scholarships, your reputation… honestly, compared to you, I think I’m coming out ahead.”
