Andromeda was the daughter of King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia of Ethiopia.

Cassiopeia boasted that she, or her daughter, was more beautiful than the Nereids, the sea nymphs.

The Nereids felt insulted and asked Poseidon to punish this arrogance.

Poseidon sent a sea monster (often called Ketos) and devastating floods upon the kingdom.

The oracle declared that the only way to save the land was to sacrifice Andromeda to the monster.

Thus, she was chained naked to a rock on the shore, awaiting her fate.

At that moment, the hero Perseus, returning from slaying Medusa, happened to pass by.

He fell in love with Andromeda at first sight and promised to save her if he could marry her.

Her parents agreed.

Perseus then slew the monster — in some versions with his sword, in others by revealing Medusa’s head and turning the creature to stone.

He freed Andromeda and took her as his wife.

After her ****, Andromeda was placed among the stars as a constellation.
