The heat creeps over Coral Lakes right after breakfast time. It’s a hot Summer day without any breeze. Lawnmowers hum somewhere down the street and sprinklers whisper. Wide streets run past large houses set back behind rows of palms. Everything looks bright and unhurried.
Lisa has set up her lemonade stand in the shade on a little patch of grass, right by the pavement. It’s a quiet corner of the neighbourhood, the sort where only the odd walker or cyclist passes. She prefers it that way, she does not like getting crowded. She puts the stand out only two or three times a year, more for the pleasure of the day and the interactions than for anything else.
The stand itself is simple: a folding table painted mint green, a striped cloth, and two glass dispensers filled with ice and pale lemonade. A pair of neat handwritten signs hang from the front. Lisa is in her late twenties, steady and cheerful, her excitement tucked into the way she stands and the small smile she keeps. She wears white trainers, short denim shorts, a white tube top, and a yellow apron tied neatly at her waist, the bright colors popping against her dark skin, which she believes helps her sell more lemonade. She is standing by the table, content to wait patiently for someone to show up.
Twenty minutes later a well-dressed couple in their sixties pauses at the stand, sun hats, sunglasses, clearly out-of-towners.. Lisa welcomes them with a big smile. “Good morning!”
“Ice-cold lemonade on the hottest day of the year, perfect timing.” Lisa flashes her big, easy smile.
“Yes, we are very lucky today!” The wife responds, with an equally big smile. “Aren’t you an angel?”
The couple inspect the stand and the woman reads the little offer card out loud, in disbelief.
“One lemonade… one kiss free?” She huffs a laugh, half-offended. “My goodness, that’s bold.”
Her husband grins.
“We are on vacation, dear. Loosen up.” He adds.
“Totally optional. Most folks just want the drink.” Lisa keeps her tone light.
The woman fans herself with her map. “Well… vacation, right?” She leans in and gives Lisa a quick, polite peck on the lips. “There. Done.”
Lisa pours two cups, slides one to the woman, then turns to the husband with the second. Before he can take it she catches his hand.
“Your turn?” she says softly, smiling.
She rises on her toes and kisses him. It’s gentle but deliberate, lips parted just enough to feel real, lingering four, five slow seconds. When she pulls back his ears are scarlet.
His wife swats his arm, laughing. “Look at you, red as a tomato!”
“She just made my day!” he mutters, clearing his throat.
Lisa hands him the cup, eyes dancing. “Come back anytime for round two.”
They wander off sipping and teasing each other. Lisa watches them go, cheeks warm, bouncing lightly on the balls of her feet, absolutely buzzing.

On a sweltering summer Saturday in an upscale Florida suburb, 28-year-old Lisa sets up her hand-painted lemonade stand on a quiet, shady corner (something she only does a few times a year). Officially she’s raising pocket money; unofficially she’s offering the neighborhood far more than drinks. She keeps the neighbourhood together.
