The Knight That Overcame Adversity

A lowly knight meets a beautiful lady, and his life as he knew it was over...

Chapter 1 by Verdant_Hatchling Verdant_Hatchling

The year was 899 PMD, Post Mana Divergence, as Rupheus Meddleguard Rorikstern III, the fifth son of the Rorikstern noble family, and all but forgotten. Until, the day came when Rupheus was to be made a knight of the royal family.

The great Kingdom of Gretesteel, led by the mighty Arthuris Eddlesin Gretesteel, second of his name.

And in the honor of their son finally becoming worthy of the Rorikstern name, they celebrated his ascension, before he left, to meet his new destiny. But not before being given a somewhat shabby chestplate, and full leather gear otherwise.

Rupheus was in the Royal Coliseum, along with a dozen other knights, all armed and ready for whatever was waiting, as he stood, the shabbiest knight present, of course.

“You fine souls have been chosen by the crown, for the express purpose of slaying the Beast of the Northern Caverns. And whosoever claims the kill, shall be granted a fiefdom, and the title of Count, as well as a hundred thousand gold.” The Royal Crier spoke confidently, as he ushered the group over to the table of weaponry, as Rupheus grabbed a glaive and a one handed shield, as he followed the royal procession of knights risking their lives for the riches they promised.

If Rupheus could pull this off, he’d be the same rank as his father… It was absurd to think, as he was walking for hours and hours.

The next day, the procession had reached the Northern Caverns, as most of them had collapsed from exhaustion, others had become quite impatient, pushing to get to the front, and Rupheus was in the middle of it all.

But then, suddenly, a very large man with a scarred face stood before the crowd, before pointing aggressively at Rupheus, a sinister glare on his face, “Hey everyone! Let’s send in this punk first!” And all Rupheus heard were various affirmations to the idea, as he was suddenly lifted from his feet, and thrown to the cavern entrance, as the same scarred guy continued, “Go on little guy, go test it out for us.” As he unsheathed his sword, pointing it towards him.

Rupheus was utterly outnumbered, and obviously outmatched, so he had **** but to turn around, and walk into the pitch black abyss that was the cavern.

As Rupheus disappeared from sight into the darkness, he held his shield at the ready, as he was holding the glaive with no real skill, overreacting to every single sound he heard.

But, as he made it further into the cavern, he heard the sounds of footsteps, and as they came closer, and closer, Rupheus turned around, ready to die.

But what did he see? Was it certain ****, in the form of some unbeatable monster? Was it an unscalable opposition he could never climb?

Nope…

It was a woman…

“Hello? I’m sorry, I gotta knock you out.”

“Huh…?” Rupheus barely reacted before a club nearly smashed into his skull, where he barely dodged it, “Shii… Why are you attacking me?!” As he screamed at her, he flung his glaive to block her club, as it sliced clean through it, with remarkable ease.

Suddenly, the youthful woman had an immensely angered face, as she screamed, “YOU BROKE MY STICK!!!” As an absurdly mighty blast of electricity struck down on Rupheus, as he screamed out, his body being fried thoroughly, dropping to the ground.

But then, the immense rage immediately faded away, as she realized what she’d done, tears burst forth from her eyes, as she cried out, “DADDY!! I hurt someone again!!” She cried in an oddly infantile manner, despite appearing to be somewhere within her twenties.

Then, as soon as her cry was heard, an ABSURDLY large man appeared from out of nowhere, well over eighteen feet tall, and nearly ten feet wide in muscles alone, as he stood over the inert form bleeding profusely, he asked angrily, “What did he do to you, my dearest daughter?” he asked in somehow the most doting tone, despite it also being utterly bloodthirsty.

“Well… he broke my stick, but that was only cause I tried to capture him.” She said embarrassingly, as she looked away from her father in shame.

“Ohh… What have I told you about human pets?” He spoke accusingly, “They’re very dirty, young lady. Are you ready to clean up after him? It is a him this time, right?” The booming voice asked her.

“Yeah, it’s him… There’s a bunch more outside, but they’re not like this one. They’re cowardly.” Her seemingly calm expression became one of rage, “They made this poor wittle baby go in here all by himself.” She was pouting as she said her next words, "Save him and kill the rest, papa?”

“Yes dear, they shall all die…”
