Private Investigator

Chapter 1 by tommyd79 tommyd79

My name is Jack Marshall and I used to be a police officer. No, I wasn’t the best cop in the precinct, nor was I the best shot. But I was always on the straight and narrow, never taking a bribe or ‘mishandling’ evidence. I even earned the esteemed title of bull dog; a loyal guardian to those he protects, sinking his fangs into those who mean to do harm. In a world tainted with corruption, sometimes always playing by the rules is like playing with fire. It was during that time I met the love of my life, Sarah Andrews.

Sarah was a key witness in a triple homicide involving two government officials and an off duty police officer. In most situations, this would have been an open and shut case. Unfortunately the suspect, Jacob Walters, was a hit-man affiliated with a powerful syndicate known as Eon Entrepreneurs. Eon Entrepreneurs dabbled in a spectrum of activities both illicit and legitimate, ranging from **** trafficking to media broadcasting. All of which were used to cover their true motive, political takeover. Jacob Walters was represented by high-status lawyers and most of the jury was either paid off or taken care of.

Sarah was indispensable and I was one of the few given the task of protecting her with my life. It was fate, I suppose. I don’t know if the feeling was mutual, but I fell in love with her almost instantly. Sarah was down to earth and I found myself intrigued by her personality and her beauty. She seemed to be able to talk about anything, from cars to politics to sports.

When the day arrived for Sarah to testify the media swarmed the courtyard with news channel personalities. I remember feeling on edge as though something just wasn’t right as we walked the steps to the court proper. As the press scattered allowing Sarah access into the municipal building I noticed one camera man bolt forward out of the corner of my eye, dropping the camera and reaching behind his back. My only thought was to protect Sarah and I wasn’t sure if I had the time to draw my gun. The only other option was to shield her body with my own.

Three shots rang out sending my chest aflame. I watched as two fellow officers tackled the gunner to the floor as the **** from the bullets swept me off me feet. I could feel someone lifting me up and cradling me in their arms as shrieks of terror and confusion filled the courtyard. I looked up to see Sarah smiling gently down at me with tears in her eyes. I pulled my suit open revealing a bulletproof vest, my arm was a different matter.

I woke in a hospital a day later. Apparently a bullet hit my right shoulder causing irreparable nerve damage. I realized at that moment almost all feeling in my right arm had disappeared. I was happy to find some of my fellow officers waiting by my bedside but thrilled to see Sarah there as well.

Sarah was able to testify in court and Jacob Walters was convicted to life in prison without parole. That was just the first step in what became known as ‘The Eradication of Eon Entrepreneurs’. Within a month, Sarah and I were living together and before the new year we were married.

Six years later..
