Chapter 27 by fantaghiro
What's next?
fragmentation weeks 2-3
While Kimberly spiraled into academic crisis, Leighton's relationship with Evan intensified in ways that caught everyone off guard.
Tom came home one evening to find them in the living room, Leighton curled against Evan on the couch, both looking at something on his phone. They were laughing, intimate, comfortable in a way that suggested this wasn't casual anymore.
"Tom, hey," Evan said with easy confidence. "Leighton and I were just talking about winter break. My family has a place in Aspen. I want her to come meet my parents."
Tom's stomach dropped. He looked at Leighton, searching for Sarah behind her eyes. She met his gaze with something complicated—awareness, defiance, genuine affection for Evan all mixed together.
"That sounds nice," Tom managed.
"My parents are dying to meet her," Evan continued. "They've heard so much."
After Evan left, Tom cornered Leighton in the kitchen. "Meeting his parents? That's serious."
"It is," Leighton said, pouring wine with steady hands. "I like him, Tom. A lot."
"But you're—" Tom stopped, aware of how insane the truth would sound. You're my wife. You're Sarah. "Does Sarah... do the others know about this?"
Leighton's expression was difficult to read. "They know. They're letting me make my own choices."
"Are they? Or is this Sarah's choice?"
"Does it matter?" Leighton took a sip of wine. "The feelings are real. When I'm with Evan, I feel happy. Safe. Excited about the future. Those emotions exist whether Sarah consciously chose them or not."
"You could be falling in love with him," Tom said quietly.
"I am falling in love with him," Leighton corrected. "I think I already have."
Tom tried to talk to Kimberly about it, but she was buried under textbooks, barely coherent. "That's Leighton's business," she mumbled. "I can't micromanage everyone right now."
The response troubled Tom deeply. The unified Sarah would have had opinions, would have consciously decided whether to pursue this relationship with Evan. But Kimberly spoke like Leighton was a separate person making independent choices that Sarah couldn't or wouldn't control.
He watched over the following week as Leighton and Evan became inseparable. They went to expensive restaurants, attended gallery openings, spent entire weekends together. Leighton glowed in a way Tom had never seen—genuine happiness that had nothing to do with status or competition and everything to do with being seen and valued by someone in her world.
One night, Tom heard them in Leighton's room. The sounds were unmistakable—gasping, moaning, the rhythmic creak of bedframe. His wife was having sex with another man twenty feet away. Sarah was experiencing Evan inside Leighton's body, feeling pleasure from someone else, making choices Tom couldn't track or understand.
The jealousy was visceral, ****. Tom lay in his own bed, listening, unable to block it out. This wasn't theoretical anymore. This was real, and it was happening without his consent or Sarah's apparent concern.
In Leighton's bed, Sarah felt Evan move inside her, felt Leighton's genuine desire for him, felt emotions that weren't chosen but emerged naturally from weeks of dating and connection. The experience fascinated and terrified her in equal measure. She loved Tom—Sarah loved Tom—but Leighton loved Evan, and the two truths coexisted without resolution.
