Chapter 6 by takacube takacube

What's next?

You wake and talk with the doctors

A few hours later, with Kerry and Saunders sitting next to your bedside, you tried to make some sense of what was going on. From what was made apparent to you, the surgery on your family had been a resounding success with little to no complications on either yourself or your brother, though how much they could say for you was little in comparison to David's body, having woken up 3 days prior. Kerry remarked that the markers for your brother's adaptions were proceeding well but that it was not clear how much it was happening and how much was it the body's way of recovering. At the confused look on your face, Saunders was a godsend in reading you and having bedside manners, Kerry just sighed and let the older doctor talk to you.

"When we told him, your brother was adamant that he be moved into this room with you. It's still not quite clear whether this is some side effect of your parents' bodies or if this is some new development with your brother's personality mixing in with your mother's." Saunders looked at you for a moment. "Did you have a particularly close relationship with him?"

You tried to stifle a laugh but failed. "You kidding? If I didn't live on the same floor as him, I wouldn't have seen him at all. He's a shut-in, never talked with either of us. I don't know how to explain it any better, really."

Saunders noted this in the file. "This is going to be interesting to see how you two get on, then. As you're aware, though, he's the one that is asking to be in the same place as you and to be with you right now. I'm not sure how to explain this to you but you'll figure it out, I'm sure." He looked at Kelly who nodded in agreement to something unspoken. "Speaking of figuring it out, I'm sure you don't need us to explain to you to keep this procedure under wraps. It's not exactly legal..."

The younger you would've blown a gasket, that was still something that registered on the heart monitor next to your head, but there was also a more clear and logical part of your new brain that made it easy to comprehend. Your dad had been the rational, logical planner and it seemed like you inherited some of it. "Sure...they'd either think we were crazy or we would be poked and prodded."

Kerry nodded. "Not to mention the issues with the family being subject to lawsuits..."

Saunders rolled his eyes. "Anyway, yes, the NDA is on the table." You watched your hand reach out to pick up the pen, the odd sight of your older hand that was a bit bigger than your regular, or former, hand. You signed the name onto the sheet, DONALD CONNORS, and the sight of how your dad signed his name you had grown up seeing forever seemed very much second-hand nature. "It's odd, isn't it? It'll be the small things that you'll notice more and more as you take over his life. Remember, it'll pass, the mind is very good at adapting as long as you don't dwell on things."

You talked with the doctors for a few more moments before there was a knock on the door. "Excuse me," Kerry got up and walked over to talk with the orderlies out of the room before he came back in. "Mr. Connors, if you don't mind, we'll be moving in Mrs. Connors." Saunders looked at you and when you just nodded, Kerry turned and stepped aside as the two men moved in a hospital bed. Your eyes locked on the person laying in it. MOM!

How does David react?
