Chapter 3 by Veiled Veiled

Do you open the message?

You open it

You sat and thought about what to do for a few long moments. Just because he’d messaged her after they’d chatted at the gym didn’t really mean anything. It could just be that he wanted to keep in touch. You and Jill were engaged, so maybe you didn’t need to be so paranoid. And yet, every time you almost turned away you found that you couldn’t. Nothing was worse than not knowing. If you opened the message, you’d at least know what the situation was. You picked up the phone and put her passcode in, opening the Snapchat app. You hovered over the snap. If you opened it, Jill would be able to see that it had been opened, supposedly by her. There was a chance she’d put together that it was actually you who had opened it. But then again, if the message was already opened and read, she might never notice it since the notification would be gone. And then even if her ex really had been trying to hit her up again, the problem would be solved before it even started. Either way, it wasn’t like she could prove you were snooping, you told yourself as you opened the message.

The picture opened in front of you. You recognized James, as you’d seen him on Facebook in old pictures with Jill. He was a pretty well built guy with short brown hair and a light tan. The picture was of him smiling and apparently sitting on his couch, clearly still in his workout clothes. “It was good catching up, we should hang out again sometime” it said. You let that sink in for a moment before closing the message. So it really was just a random coincidence she’d run into him. They weren’t talking regularly or anything. Of course not. I mean, if anything weird had been going on, why would she have drawn your attention to it? You felt silly for worrying. You’d just been paranoid after all.

You set the phone back down, trying to remember just the right position it had been in on the table. Another fifteen minutes or so passed, and Jill came back downstairs, wearing a cute blue nightgown now. Her long blonde hair still looked a little damp, and her ample cleavage still held a few errant drops of moisture from the shower. “Still watching the same thing?” She asked you as she got comfortable on the couch beside you. “Yeah, I’ll fill you in.” You told her. She listened and absorbed your summary of the plot before nodding and letting you unpause it. Despite this, she didn’t seem as into the show as you were, and she picked up her phone shortly thereafter. This made you a little anxious given the circumstances, but a few minutes of normalcy passed before she made a confused face. She looked from the screen of her phone to the clock on the wall. “That’s weird.” She said, and while it was loud enough for you to hear, it was almost as if she was saying it to herself. “What’s weird?” You asked, feigning ignorance. She turned and looked at you, her blue eyes gazing into yours.

“Well- my phone is telling me I opened a message like ten minutes ago, but I definitely didn’t. You, um… you didn’t touch my phone or anything, did you?” She asked, her face a mixture of concern and confusion. You shifted uncomfortably on the couch. “No, why would I? Which app are you talking about, maybe it’s just bugged right now. Maybe you need to update it or something.” You said, quickly coming up with a few excuses. Jill gave you that same searching look she’d given you before, when you hid the truth about work from her. Then her expression settled into one that looked a little sad, but she nodded. “Okay. Yeah. Must be a weird glitch, I guess.” She said quietly. But she moved a little further away on the couch. A couple minutes later she held up her phone to take a picture of herself. You noticed she tilted the phone down quite a bit, and realized that angle would get quite a nice view of her chest. A couple minutes later her phone buzzed. She picked it up, and you snuck a furtive glance towards her, wanting to see her reaction. She smiled and bit her lip at whatever message she’d just gotten before quickly typing in response.

She seemed excited
