Chapter 10 by Garbodor23 Garbodor23

Into the light?

You aren't a cat, so curiosity can't hurt you.

The growing light was revealed around the next bend, its ambient glow outlining the jagged shore of the cave and its sparse growth as you dug in the pole to help along the turn. As the raft bobbed into this new development, you felt a vague sense of vertigo, gripping the pole as your gaze drew inexorably upwards.

The caves you were in before felt large, expansive and substantial. They dwarfed the claustrophobic passages from back home. But this chamber was an entirely different, top of the food chain, beast. The close ceiling fell away and up into something of dizzying scale. Lights twinkled far above you, making you briefly wonder if you simply emerged under the open starry sky. The closer of these lights however were pulsing, and a vague plant-like shape could be made out. Some kind of phosphorescent growth that marked out the distant scale of this room. But that was not the primary light source here.

The crest of the ceiling roiled with the same fog you saw in the first chamber, burning with an inner white light. It cast the full expanse with a pale, near directionless light. The lake opened up into what felt more like ocean. Its far edge could not be seen even with the glow. But the glow did reveal some interesting landmarks jutting out of the water. One was an island, rocky protrusions of a yet indiscernible size and distance. The other was the distinct silhouette of a three mast ship, an honest oceanic vessel. The sails were drawn, but were tattered and loosely hung in the dead air.

Head for land or check out the derelict ship?
