Do you accept?
Yes
The water was lukewarm, rippling gently under the patio lights as you stepped down into the shallow end. Cameron was already gliding through the deeper section, her long hair floating around her like dark silk. Without the distraction of clothes, the reality of the situation hit you—two young men who knew each other from around the neighborhood, now floating in a pool in transformed bodies under the night sky.
"So," you said, resting your arms along the smooth tile edge to keep your balance, "you mentioned you took regular X-Change just to get a babysitting gig?"
Cameron turned, floating on her back and looking up at the stars. "Pretty much. The Smith family was set on hiring a woman for the summer. The pay was way too good to pass up, so I figured... why not adapt to the market? It’s not like the change is permanent unless you keep taking them." She paused, tilting her head to look at you with a slight smirk. "What about you? What's your excuse?"
"Curiosity, mostly," you replied smoothly, keeping your tone casual while taking in every detail. "Though I didn't expect to bump into anyone I knew, let alone end up in a pool."
"Fair enough," Cameron chuckled, kicking her legs lightly. "Honestly, it’s kind of a relief. I’ve been holding my breath all evening, terrified I’d slip up or that someone would notice something off. You have no idea how stressful it is trying to maintain a complete lie in front of employers."
You noted the detail carefully—Cameron wasn't just using the pills casually; she was actively using them to secure positions and access homes under false pretenses. That kind of information could come in handy depending on how the rest of the night unfolded.
"It must be exhausting," you agreed, drifting a little closer toward the middle of the pool. "Does anyone else back home know you use X-Change, or am I the only one who stumbled onto your little secret?"
Cameron's smile faltered slightly, a flicker of hesitation crossing her face before she brushed a wet strand of hair behind her ear. "There is a couple of others."
Does Cameron figure out who you are?
