Chapter 24 by MrTwister8 MrTwister8

What's next?

Yes

All I could do was nod, my tongue still bound by the large presence in my mouth. Sensing my compliance, the elder withdrew with surprising politeness.

“I should have asked sooner, forgive me,” he said, adjusting his posture with effortless grace. “I was taken by your eagerness and forgot that you are unacquainted with our customs.”
“There is nothing to forgive,”
I gasped, drawing in deep, ragged breaths of the crisp night air. “This is truly... an honor.”
“The honor is entirely ours, human,” the elder replied, a knowing glint in his ancient eyes. “After all, it is not every day we receive a scion of the royal family.”

A cold jolt struck me. The fact that my lineage was known shattered any hope of anonymity. Despite the apparent esteem of the ritual, some discreteness would’ve been welcomed.... but we were already too far down this path to turn back.

“There are a few paths yet available to you, human,” the elder explained, mapping out the remaining steps of the rite. My face flushed a deep crimson as the graphic realities of those options laid themselves bare before me.
“And I must choose one?” I asked, my voice trembling with a mix of nervousness and excitement.
“But of course. The blessing will fade swiftly if left unguided, and our entire ritual would be squandered. Just look around you...” He spread his arms wide, gesturing to the absolute dedication of his flock. The sheer authority in his tone was dizzying; for a fleeting moment, it made this entire display feel entirely natural, turning my own hesitation into the only strange thing in the clearing.

I **** myself to look. My eyes scanned the amphitheater, catching the intense, hyper-focused expressions of the druids as they lost themselves in the fervor of the rite... Just paces away, figures were locked in the fierce, rhythmic pulse of the ceremony, destroying any boundaries between each other with a raw, uninhibited energy that seemed to vibrate through the very stones...! Everywhere I turned, the clearing offered vivid demonstrations of the total devotion required for the roles left for me to fill.

There were indeed many paths available... if only I possessed the courage to brave them.

Do I feel courageous?
