Smoke rose in the distance to the East. She sighed with relief. She’d be able to find her way back. She shimmied down the tree, knowing she needed to head east. The fact that she’d be walking into the encroaching night wasn’t lost on her, but she figured if she could hurry she might be able to make it home by dawn. She’d just have to be careful.

Softly, she padded barefoot into the deep. As she walked from the clearing she’d fallen into, the trees grew more and more dense. There was rustling around her; she knew it was the denizens of the forest coming out for the night. She hoped against hope that she wouldn’t meet any of them. As she walked, she grew more and more relaxed. The creatures seemed to be avoiding her for the most part, but it was the humanoid creatures she really had to watch out for. Hunters brought stories back to town of orcs, minotaurs, and wolf men among other horrors. She was confident in her magics, but the anxiety remained.

Suddenly, she heard something to her right. Her attention snapped in that direction, but it wasn’t enough to stop what was coming.
