Sam thought long and hard about what he would do next and when his mind finally settled on the answer he drew himself up and spoke with as much certainty and power as he could convey.

“In the next second, reality will go back to the way it was before I got this power.”

The familiar sense of vertigo struck, the shift of awareness as things subtly changed around him. A beat. He regained himself.

The receptionist looked at him in the typical bland way. “That’s a pity. I rather thought your new existence was so much more interesting,” a shadow of a smile quirked at the corner of his mouth, “but I wonder what you’re going to do next?”

“Well that’s easy,” Sam stared directly at this…man? Creature? And spoke. “I don’t have the power to change reality with my words.”

There was vertigo, but this time it felt stronger, a full blown migraine that brought Sam to his knees. When he recovered he noticed that the receptionist had a decidedly new expression on his face.

A look of utter contempt.

“You coward,” he hissed. “We gave you the power of a God and you squandered it for ….mundanity. You ungrateful wretch.”

“My life might be boring,” Sam agreed, slowly rising to his feet, “but …it’s a good life. Good enough.”

The receptionist continued to stare unblinkingly. “Go back to your little life then. But you won’t stop us. Once your year long contract is up we’ll hand the power to someone else, someone more entertaining.”

Sam waved the comment away. “If so I look forward to reading about them.”

Without another word he turned and left the building, got into his car-back to it’s previous, boring form-and began the long drive home. It would be his birthday soon and that was all the excitement he’d need.

THE END

A/N: so this is the “good” ending, or at least the most traditionally moral good ending. But I plan to go back and expand upon different paths, which’ll be a whole lot less vanilla. Also if anyone wants to make their own contributions to this thread with Sam I’m more than happy for you to do so.
