The vice-grip that has been holding your heart hostage loosens at the doctor’s words. You always wanted a lot of kids. You don’t know what you would’ve done if the doctor hadn’t given you the all-clear. The government can’t forcibly sterilize you unless you commit a crime or something, but with all their tax penalties they make it damn expensive to have kids when they don’t want you too.

“I’ve heard about the breeding program, but I don’t really understand how it works. Can you explain it to me?” you ask him.

“Woman enroll in the breeding program by signing a contract stipulating the number of children they will have. The government then provides the women with free healthcare and a monthly stipend for living expenses. For each healthy child born, the woman also receives a hefty bonus,” the doctor eagerly tells you, “It’s a good deal. The women are able to relax and focus on caring for themselves and their children. The stipend is big enough to live on comfortably. You won’t even need a job.”

That does sound nice. “What happens to the babies?”

“It depends on the mother. Some choose to raise the kids, but most surrender the infants to the state. The state finds good homes for them among those who are unfit to breed.”
