Chapter 5

Does she touch it?
Yes (TW: Gore)
The watch stared up at her. She'd seen such things many times as a child, trinkets woven by the magics her people spent thousands of years taming. But seeing them from a distance was very different from being so close.
Her fingers stretched towards the little device, feeling the tingle of the magic. Every elvish child was told of their people's innate sense for the aether, mostly as a warning in case they should come across some ancient relic or weapon. Magic was, as she'd been told over and over again, not to be trifled with.
The irony of how all those old matrons who cackled about the dangers of magic was lost on her in the moment as she reached closer and closer, the tingling feeling growing stronger, calling to her. Then she touched it.
For one brief moment she could feel the weave of magic bound into the watch, how the aether had been drawn out into the world and attached to the physical object to drive it. It was beautiful and Tsan stared at it, her eyes glowing with azure light from the enchantment as she watched it start to unravel about the edges.
The energy that had once been bound in the strands of aether, now freed and desperately seeking a more stable medium, took the most direct route towards equilibrium with the environment: transitioning to kinetic, and then through friction into heat. Of course that meant transitioning the entire energy of the enchantment to the metal of the watch casing at once. Subjected to strain it was never intended to endure, the metal stressed, fractured and shattered in a fraction of a second, sending a wave of metal splinters in all directions.
The unintentional grenade might have done enough damage, however the remainder of the energy, no longer able to neatly convert itself to an improvised explosive via the casing, instead made the jump directly to heat, sending a pulse across the room as the now hot air **** the cooler air aside with a pulse of eardrum shattering sound that blew out every window on the floor.
The burly bouncer was the first to arrive at the epicenter of the blast, his ears ringing as he stared, aghast. As hearing returned, he could make out Tsan screaming as she stood, miraculously unharmed in the center of the ruin, splattered in the blood of her friend and her client, their bodies barely recognizable where they lay in a twisted heap mixed with the smoldering remains of the couch.
Still dazed, he barked orders to the other employees now arriving, not worrying about whether they made sense in the moment. "Atish, water to put out the flames! Val, get Tsan cleaned off and into clothes! Myra, find someone to help you get these bodies out of here! Ulsa, tell any clients on this floor we'll pay for their discretion."
He turned, practically slamming into his employer, standing like some primal goddess amid the mess. "What. The fuck, Rob." She uttered, an invocation so forceful that despite being practically whispered, the entire room paused for a moment.
Rob looked down at the woman and winced. "I don't know ma'am. He seemed like the usual type, money to blow, no sense, but..." He looked back at the scene. "I've never seen..." He trailed off, unsure what to say.
"Shut her up." The woman was looking towards Tsan, before making a curt gesture towards the back. "Bring her to my rooms. -After- she's cleaned up."
Val, a wide-hipped elvish woman with silver-green hair had managed to quiet Tsan, and began guiding her away, offering a meek nod at the owner's command.
Rob stood, confused and blinking as the owner began moving away. His confusion was amplified when two of the guests approached, a tall lanky man and a tiny figure, bowing to the owner and then speaking in hushed tones. It was clear by her body language that they were irritating, however she didn't signal for any of the bouncers and staff now abundant in the room to rid herself of them.
What's the first rule of making money?

Tales from an Ailing Land
A selection of tales, mostly following an ill-fated elf, but probably some others too, within a fantasy world decaying under the weight of its own sins and decadence. (Prostitution, , , Elves, , Goblins, BDSM, More to be added) This is not a happy tale.
