Chapter 4

What does Maya do now?

Writing on The Wall

Maya was having mixed emotions right now. On the one hand, her time device had actually worked, meaning she'd be famous within hours of unveiling it to the world.

On the other hand, she was now trapped thousands of years in the past thanks to that time device, with no clear way of ever getting back home.

"Okay, Maya." she told herself, taking a deep breath. "You're trapped in the Ice Age, topless no less, but you're a scientist. All you have to do is find a way back to your time... Without doing anything that will inevitably screw up the space-time continuum. No pressure."

Maya looked down at her mud coated skin and jeans, letting out a sigh. "Well, so much for my shower."

Looking back up, Maya walked through the fields, thinking of a way back home. A vast majority of the equipment she needed wouldn't be forged, invented, or discovered yet. As she passed a rock wall, that she was sure would end up a McDonald's several thousands of years down the line, she paused in thought.

"If I can't go to the present," Maya said as an idea came to her, "then maybe I can have the present come to me."

Maya looked around and found a rock, approaching the wall as she began to write. "Dear Anybody, I am trapped in -"

Maya had stopped writing as a small mewling noise came from somewhere at her feet. Looking down, she saw what looked like a lion cub looking up at her, pawing at her pant leg playfully.

"Uh oh..." Maya muttered, a fearful look in her eye. This little critter was cute, but she had been to the natural history museum enough times to realize that this was a sabertooth cat cub. And where there was a cub...

"R-run along now, Little Guy." Maya stammered as she slowly tried to back away, "Your Mommy is probably worried about you."

The cub came closer, letting out a small mewl.

"Look, my species wipes yours out by killing off your food supply, so you don't wanna play with me." Maya said, "Plus, I really don't want your mother getting the wrong idea."

The cub came forward.

"Of course, this is what you get when you try to reason with an animal..." Maya moaned to herself, shaking her head. She then took a deep breath and shouted, "GET LOST!"

The cub flinched slightly and backed away.

"Oh, so now you get it, you prehistoric -"

*ROAR!*

Maya's face fell into a flat expression. "Ah, crap..."

"Keep running! Keep running! Keep running!" Maya repeatedly told herself as she ran from the mother sabertooth, the large cat a few yards behind but still on her tail.

How does Maya get out of this?
