Visit the mineral springs

Chapter 9 by Lantash

Andreas leads you through the doorway into the spa interior, the steam thickening around you until the courtyard and Triton's fountain fade into memory. The passage opens into a larger chamber lined with pale tiles the color of sea foam, the air heavy with moisture and the faint mineral tang of sulfur.

"Showers first," Andreas says, gesturing toward a row of open stalls along the far wall. "The springs are therapeutic, but we ask guests to rinse off before entering. The minerals can react poorly to lotions, perfumes... other substances." His tone suggests he's speaking from specific experience. "Take your time. When you're ready, the main spring is through the archway to your left. I'll be attending the desk if you need anything."

He withdraws, leaving you alone with the sound of dripping water and the distant, rhythmic bubbling of the springs. You shower quickly, the warm water sluicing away the grit of the day. Wrapped in a towel provided on a bamboo rack, you step through the archway Andreas indicated.

The mineral spring opens before you—a natural stone basin fed by bubbling vents in the floor, the water a cloudy, opalescent blue that seems to glow from within. Steam rises in lazy spirals, and the heat wraps around your bare skin like a blanket. You drop your towel in a basket by the archway and lower yourself into the water, the heat immediately penetrating sore muscles you didn't know you had.

The water settles around you in perfect solitude. No other guests disturb the quiet—only the gentle bubbling of the vents and your own breathing break the silence. You lean your head back against the smooth stone rim, letting the mineral heat seep into your bones, untangling knots of tension and fatigue.

The water seems to draw something from you—not just physical fatigue, but a certain restless energy, a corruption of the spirit that travel and strange circumstances have seeded. You feel it leaching away into the mineral bath, leaving you cleaner than when you entered.

When you finally rise, pruned and drowsy, the afternoon light has shifted. You dress and make your way back to the entrance, where Andreas nods as if unsurprised by your solitude. "The springs choose who they welcome," he says simply. "Some find company. Others find peace."
