Chapter 4
by
Jilling Time
Who picked it up?
Valerie Pearce, Her Arch Rival
Valerie tapped her foot against the floor out of boredom. These types of parties typically weren't her thing, but it was a good opportunity to scope out Jessica's place. The two girls were at the top of practically every aspect of their school. Jessica was head cheerleader, while Valerie was captain of the Softball team. Valerie had won academic competitions at a state and even national level, where as Jessica's art pieces were critically acclaimed. Both girls could get into whatever university they wanted simply based on recommendations, not to mention scholarships.
The only problem was that the two of them got along like oil and water. Valerie thought that the cheerleader was far too outgoing and immature, while Jessica felt her rival only knew how to make connections in a professional setting. This contrast had been what fueled their rivalry over the years. However, it was all coming to a head in the next month. They were graduating soon, and everyone knew that one of them would be announced valedictorian. The only question was who. As much as Valerie had a grudging respect for Jessica (and she was sure the other girl felt the same), it was time to decide once and for all who was really in charge. Valerie knew she would need every possible advantage she could get. Part of that included coming to this party.
Valerie scanned the room, looking for any kind of personal information about the host. She figured that she'd be kicked out the moment Jessica spotted her, but until that happened she could try to find some **** material. Being cutthroat and ruthless was the best way to survive in the modern world. It was while she was looking around the garden that she noticed a glint coming from beneath her feet. She found a moderately fancy ring - not as expensive as most engagement rings, but enough to be of significant monetary value.
While she wasn't against underhanded tactics, outright larceny still crossed the line. Valerie sighed and begrudgingly decided to track down whoever it belonged to. If it belonged to Jessica, she could use the favour as leverage in the future. She slipped the ring on her finger to ensure she didn't lose it and walked back into the party to get her new chore over with.
"I wish whoever this ring belonged to would just show up," she muttered under her breath.
Does Valerie discover the ring's powers?
