Chapter 9 by pad03 pad03

What does Annette do?

Tries to lose them in the trees opposite

Unconvinced that Erena would grant her the power to fight off the undead in what would undoubtedly be a last stand in the chapel, she instead took off sprinting towards the safe-looking treeline.

The three zombies bolted after her and Annette knew that it was only a matter of time before they caught up, but still she ran in the hopes that she could find someone or something to save herself. It wasn't long before she entered the dark forest, illuminated only by the moonlight passing through the canopy above. Navigation was difficult but adrenaline made her alert and reactive enough to avoid tripping over rocks, fallen branches and roots sticking up through the brush. Panting as she continued to run, she could overhear the snarling of the monsters pursuing her closing in behind her. Turning her head for a brief moment, she caught glimpse of a bit of luck as one of the undead put its foot under an exposed tree root she had dodged earlier, before falling forward into a rock neck-first with a sickening crunching sound.

Three had turned to two as they tirelessly chased the redhead through the woods. The trees began to thin out and were replaced with stumps as Annette noticed a cabin with a light on outside up ahead. It had to be the lumberjack's house... She could only pray that the man was still in there as the chances of her alone holding back these creatures from breaking through a door was unlikely to say the least - and that was assuming she could even get in? What if it was locked?

Past the point of contemplation, she had little choice - the zombies were almost on top of her now. Annette used all of her remaining energy to close the gap to the cabin and knowing it was her only hope, she screamed out:

"SOMEONE... ANYONE, PLEASE HELP!"

Rotten arms reached out a few feet from her auburn hair as the chase followed through the moonlit covered clearing and as Annette barrelled into the cabin's wall, before she could try and tear the wooden door open, it flung out and a rugged, broad-shouldered man charged out, axe in hand.

The blunt end of the axe head plunged into the decaying flesh of a zombie's torso before the man began to yell and pull back, raising the tool over his head with enough **** to send the creature into the air before it landed as a disgusting wet mess, sprawled over a nearby stump. Clammy hands reached up Annette's leg as the remaining attacker began to drag her away from the cabin, until the man roared and brought the axe blade down, deep into the back of it's skull. Rotten fluids leaked out profusely into the grass below as the lumberjack drew his weapon free, before going over to the first one, still convulsing and cleanly decapitating it. Spitting in disgust, he rubbed the blade against the brush in an effort to clean most of the viscera off before turning back around to face Annette. Wiping the errant flecks of rot from his beard with the back of his arm and resting the axe on his shoulder, he then asked with a gruff voice:

"...Y'alright, lass? ...Any wounds I need to know about?"

How does she respond?
