Chapter 142
by
SG
What does Regina do?
Tries to do what she's supposed to.
"Oh, shit..." Regina whispered. "Shit shit shit. Oh my God, you're really- really-"
The motionless form did not respond to her panicked cursing, of course. Regina felt dizzy and collapsed backwards into a cheap dining chair. "Fuck, Madison. You're a golem. You're a real-life fucking golem. I... shit."
She grabbed the two scripts off the ground and looked them over curiously. They were almost completely identical and Regina realized she had lost track of which one belonged to which golem. She cautiously approached Madison's body with the one she thought was from her. It felt somehow wrong to her, manipulating her friend in this state, but she knew she needed to. She delicately placed the script on Madison's tongue and lightly touched her forehead.
"AKEDAH," she said nervously. For a second nothing happened, then Madison's limbs tightened and color came back to her eyes. She rose to standing and surveyed the room briefly before smiling at Regina.
"Hello," she said in a warm tone. "I'm Madison. How can I help you?"
"What the fuck?" Regina said. "Mads, it's me! Oh God, did I screw something up? Did I like, erase you or something?"
Madison frowned sympathetically. "I don't think you've screwed anything up or erased me. You may be thinking of a different script; to my knowledge, I've never met you. Perhaps you'd like to replace my script with the one in your hand?"
Regina was too shocked to answer. The thing that had been her best friend moments ago was now a calm, detached servant.
"You're... you're like Lauren now. You don't have any personality or anything anymore. You're... oh God, Mads, this is fucking crazy! You don't remember me at all? Even a little?"
"I have to admit that you seem familiar," Madison admitted. "I believe I've spent time with you while bound to other scripts, but the details are hazy."
"I guess I did mix up the scripts," Regina said. "Seriously, Mads, you're not in there at all? Do you even know where you are?"
"I'm in the apartment I share with Ross, Andrew, and Maria. Unless that's changed since I was last bound. We didn't have another golem here last time. Is there anything else I can answer or do to assist you?"
"So if I put Madison's script in her, will she become Madison?" Regina asked. "Like Freaky Friday?"
"Not exactly," Madison chuckled. "Her name is immutable across scripts. Whatever name she currently uses, it will be that name. She also won't have any of the memories of things I've done with that script. Memories are tied to the golem's body and translated through their script, so if you've never met that golem with this script she'll be a stranger to you."
Regina bent to activate Pat. She followed the instructions again and in moments Pat was standing and looking around approvingly.
"Nice place!" she said. "I like the decor. I'm Pat, by the way. It's nice to meet both of you!"
Regina stared at her and she chuckled nervously. "Uh, you're supposed to introduce yourself now."
"Hello," the other golem said. "I'm Madison."
Regina felt an overwhelming sense of unreality as she introduced herself to a golem with the mind of her close friend and none of her memories. "Regina. You, uh... you don't remember me at all?"
Pat shook her head. "I'm so sorry, but I don't. Am I supposed to?"
"As I said," Madison reminded Regina, "she has no memories of anything that didn't happen to her specifically."
Regina shuddered a little. Seeing her friend in this strange zombie-like state was thoroughly unnerving but slightly thrilling. She reminded herself that it wasn't Madison; it was some other script in Madison's body.
"So," Pat said amicably. "What do you want to do with us, Regina?"
Well?
