What next
They get to the hot tub
Aiden disappeared down the hall, swinging his door shut to get ready to head out. By the time he emerged again with his shoes on and a jacket slung over one arm, the table was mostly cleared. He pecked a quick kiss on his mom’s cheek, muttered, “it’s good to see you,” and slipped out with a wave. The apartment door closed behind him, leaving the two women alone at the table.
Lisa leaned back in her chair with a content sigh, swirling the last of her water. “That was delicious. But after that drive, I could use a soak.” Her eyes drifted toward the window, where the courtyard lights glowed faintly through the blinds. “You have a hot tub here, don’t you?”
Natalie scoffed at the idea. “Pfft. We do, but it’s a little chilly out for me, and you just got in. Are you sure you don’t just want to relax here and catch up?”
“That’s what the hot tub is for. The cold doesn’t matter,” Lisa said, perking up at the idea. “Come on, Nat. Don’t make me go by myself.”
Natalie hesitated, catching herself fidgeting with the edge of the table. In all the time she’d lived here, she’d never actually gone out to the hot tub at night.
Lisa smirked, reading her pause. “Come on, it’s just us. I guarantee you’ll be thanking me when you’re dropping into that hot water.” She stood and reached across the table to tug lightly at Natalie’s wrist. “Grab your suit.”
Natalie sighed, but smiled slightly despite herself. “Fine, but only because I love you.”
“That’s my girl,” Lisa teased, heading for her suitcase as they entered the bedroom. She tossed a mischievous glance over her shoulder. “And honestly, it’s been way too long since I’ve seen you in a bikini.”
Natalie barked out a quick “Ha,” shaking her head. “You’re terrible.”
Lisa crouched by her suitcase, clearly looking pleased with herself. She pulled out a hibiscus-print tie-side bottom and held it by the strings, appraising it with a wicked little grin. “I love this one.”
They changed with the comfort that came with being old friends, moving in and out of each other’s space. Natalie slipped into a black triangle top and the string bottoms she reserved for days she felt brave. The fabric sat well below her waistline, in a neat V that lengthened her torso, and the thin side strings rode high on her hips. There were also small, decorative beads at each tie that clicked softly when she adjusted the knots. The back was cheeky, not for the timid, and made her legs seem longer than they actually were.
She checked the mirror, feeling the confidence she needed to be comfortable in it. The black set off her waist and the curve of her hips. Her stomach was flat and tight from years of yoga and a fairly regular gym routine.
Lisa stepped next to her a second later in her hibiscus print bikini. The ties were pulled snug and high on her petite frame. The print was bold on the black field, while the cut of the bottoms were narrower than Natalie’s, with a back that left very little to the imagination.
Natalie’s confidence held, but seeing the way Lisa’s showed her off almost made her feel shy. The comparison wasn’t unflattering, far from it. Next to Lisa, she looked fuller and stronger through the thighs and hips, appearing more athletic rather than delicate. Lisa, in contrast, looked small and unabashed, with softer lines and clearly comfortable in her own skin.
Lisa caught her looking and smiled like she’d been waiting for the verdict. “Well?” she asked, teasing more with her eyes than her voice.
“You look good,” Natalie said, and meant it.
“I feel good,” Lisa replied, giving the ties one last tug, then turning, satisfied. “Come on, before you change my mind and decide you’re not going.”
“I still might,” Natalie chuckled, grabbing a pair of towels and handing one over.
They slid into sandals, gathered their water bottles, and headed for the door. When they stepped outside, the night air was cool enough to raise goosebumps on Natalie’s arms, making the thought of the hot tub instantly more appealing. Lisa hugged her towel around her as they walked down the path toward the pool gate. “I think it’s a perfect night for this. Nothing better than a hot tub when it’s cold out.”
Natalie smiled at her, opening the gate. The pool area was mostly empty, save for the bubbling glow of the hot tub, and two men who were stretched out inside, with the steam rising around them. Both had sports bottles propped on the ledge, and their amusement carried across the pool area as they turned to notice the women stepping in.
Lisa leaned closer with a playful tone as she whispered, “Well, this got more interesting.”
“Hey there,” one of the guys called as they approached.
“Evening,” Lisa responded with a grin, unwrapping her towel from under her arms and draping it neatly over the rail.
Natalie laid hers beside it and quickly slipped into the water with a subtle hiss. “It’s hot,” she muttered under her breath, sitting on the submerged bench.
Lisa cast a quick glance at the two men before stepping in after her. “Yeah,” she said with a teasing smirk, easing down until the water lapped at her chest. “Can’t argue that,” she finished, looking at one of the two guys.
The man she was staring at smiled, while letting his gaze rove over her, and the corners of Lisa’s mouth curved a little higher, leaning back against the bubbling jets, feeling a little charged from the fact she could still get attention from guys so much younger.
“Not a bad night for it,” one of the men said, lifting his sports bottle with a grin, clearly checking the two ladies out. “The water’s perfect.”
