Who's there?
Their landlord, Mr. Romano
Jenna opened the door to be greeted by the sight of a tall and heavyset man. He had olive skin and jet-black, slick-back hair, that sported a few greys on the sides. His jaw was shaded with short stubble, and below that dark chest hair was visible sneaking out the top of his dirty white vest, that was stretched taut over his stomach to tuck into his jeans.
"Oh, hi Mr. Romano," Jenna greeted him, allowing the door to open wider now that she knew there was a friendly face on the other side.
"Jenna!" He smiled, drawing her name out like he was greeting a friend after a long absence and not talking to one of his newest tenants. "It's always so good to see you!" His dark brown eyes dropped briefly to her chest in her tanktop, and Jenna wished she had thrown a jacket on before opening the door.
"So, what can I help you with?" She asked, folding her arms in front of her DD breasts in an effort to stop him from staring at them.
"I just wanted to remind you about the rent tomorrow, like you asked me to," Mr. Romano replied, his gaze finally leaving Jenna's boobs to look her in the eyes again.
Jenna was taken aback. "We paid up for three months," she said, her eyes darting briefly to the side as she found herself second guessing what month it was.
"Yes," her landlord nodded, "three months ago, now rent is due tomorrow, last Friday of the month."
With a pit forming in the bottom of her stomach, Jenna stepped out into the hallway, pulling the door halfway closed behind her so that David wouldn't hear. "Are you sure? Because I could have sworn that it was..."
"I am always sure when it comes to money," Mr. Romano cut her off, wagging his finger knowingly. "Your rent due tomorrow. That will not be a problem, right?" His jovial attitude seemed to fade, his bushy eyebrows furrowing as he looked down at Jenna.
She didn't answer straight away. Her brain was too busy trying to find where she'd gone wrong. She thought she had timed it all out, so that David's paycheck would come in the same day that rent was due. He was paid Fridays biweekly on the first and the third and. . . he'd been paid last Friday.
"Oh erm, yeah, that'll be fine Mr. Romano," Jenna lied, pushing her long blonde hair off her face with one hand even as she felt her pulse quicken in her chest.
Mr. Romano's expression remained dark, as if a shadow had fallen over his eyes. "Are you sure?" he muttered, leaning close, "I'd hate to have to evict a sweet young couple like you and your David."
"It will totally be fine," Jenna **** a laugh, "just, uh..."
"What?"
"Is it okay if I pay in cash? My bank account's still a little empty after paying for all the new furniture and stuff."
In an instant, Mr. Romano's expression lightened, his smile reappearing on his face. "Of course that's okay," he threw his hands wide, "as they say, cash is king. I will come by the same time tomorrow to collect.
Jenna nearly flinched at that. If he came by at the same time on Friday then David would be there, and she would have to explain to the both of them how she'd miscounted and spent most of the rent on groceries. "Is it alright if you come by a little earlier? I might be doing something that evening."
"Ah, I should have known," he laughed, "a pretty young thing like you, I'm sure you'll want to go out dancing on Friday. Okay, I will come by in the afternoon for the payment."
"Great, I'll see you then."
"I'm looking forward to it already, ha!" Mr. Romano smiled, nodding goodbye to her as he set off back down the hallway. Jenna waved to him as he turned the corner, before slinking back into the apartment, and closing the door behind her.
Once inside, she locked the door, before falling back to lean against it. The wood was cold on her back, but it did little to chill the heat she felt rising from her feet, through her stomach, all the way to her cheeks. Rent was due tomorrow, and she knew without even looking that she didn't have the money to pay for it. David wouldn't have enough either, even if she could summon the courage to admit her stupid mistake and ask him.
With a shuddering sigh, Jenna flicked her eyes up to stare at the popcorn ceiling of the hall, as if hoping to see a solution in the uneven patterns. When none appeared, she set to thinking of one for herself. She could try and earn the hundreds necessary in less than 24 hours, ask David if he had any ideas, beg Mr. Romano for a little more time, or come clean to both of them that she had no money.
Since the last one meant being evicted, and humiliated before her loving boyfriend, she disregarded that idea.
"Is everything alright Jenna?" David called from the kitchen.
"It's fine, I'm coming," she shouted back. With a final sigh, she pushed herself off the door. In a way, she was still in the same predicament from before, only more urgent. With less than a day in her hands, she'd have to think of some way to solve the rent issue.
What will she do about the rent?
