The lower decks

Chapter 30 by MrTwister8 MrTwister8

Desperate to escape the suffocating monotony of my cabin, I took to wandering the lower decks of the ship. The narrow, dimly lit corridors were quiet, save for the rhythmic creak of the wooden hull against the sea. But as I passed the heavy iron-reinforced hatch leading to the main cargo hold, a muffled wall of noise caught my ear. I heard thumping boots, raucous laughter, and the distinctive, booming bellows of dwarven shouting.

I hesitated, but curiosity won in the end.

I cracked the hatch open and picked my way down the steep ladder, the air growing noticeably thicker with every step down. The smell hit me first: a potent, muggy blend of oak barrels, wet rope, stale ale, and sheer bodily heat. Rounding a towering stack of supply crates, I stumbled right onto the scene.

Baelog and the other dwarves had set up camp around an overturned cargo box, completely taking over the space. They were huddled tightly alongside a few off-duty human sailors and a couple of towering, broad-shouldered Night Elf deckhands. A solitary lantern swung gently overhead, casting long, dramatic shadows across the gathered group and glinting off the sweat sheen on their bare skin. Half the men had already discarded their heavy tunics and leather vests against the muggy sea air, creating an atmosphere that felt intensely rowdy and cramped.

{if game:Uthul_in_party = true} Sitting right in the thick of it all was Uthul, towering over the dwarves like a green mountain. Despite some remaining friction between them, she had integrated into the crew’s boisterous gambling circle with terrifying ease. Stripped down to her undergarments in the muggy heat, her broad, muscular frame squeezed onto a tiny wooden barrel between Baelog and an off-duty sailor, a heavy tankard clutched effortlessly in one broad hand as she matched the dwarves roar for roar. {endif}

{if game:card_games_with_the_dwarves = true} It didn’t take a genius to figure out what was going on. I’d already had the... pleasure of joining these stubby bastards for a round of cards earlier in our journey, so I knew firsthand just how quickly a “friendly” dwarven table could spiral out of control. Seeing them huddled up with the ship’s crew{if game:Uthul_in_party = true} and our former orc captor{endif} made me smirk; at least I knew what kind of chaos I was walking into this time. {else}

I’d heard whispers about how dwarves liked to gamble, but seeing it up close was a whole different story. They were practically hanging off the crates, slamming their beefy fists down and bellowing curses in Khazalid that made even the seasoned elven sailors wince.

As I took another step forward, my boot creaked against a loose floorboard. Baelog’s head snapped toward me, a sly, crooked grin splitting his thick beard as he held up a hand of battered, sea-stained cards.

“Well, look who finally decided to crawl out of his royal quarters!” he barked, slamming a heavy copper coin onto the wood. {if game:Uthul_in_party = true}Uthul let out a deep, amused chuckle beside him, giving me a familiar, wicked smirk over the rim of her mug as Baelog gestured grandly to the table.{endif} “Come on over, Your Highness! We’re playing for high stakes, low morals, and whatever gear ye’ve got left to gamble!”
