The first roll of the game (!)

Mia was really weirded out by the magnet thing, and desperately wanted to ask Sophie more questions about her black market board game contact, but ultimately gave in. She took the dice, shook them, and rolled.

“Ten, nice,” Mia said, adding up the six and the four she rolled. She reached for her mailbox, but before she got to it, it started sliding forward in an eerie fashion.

Faith and Sophie let out an “Oooooo…” in unison, clearly impressed by the extraordinary game.

“Okay, you’re gonna tell me magnets know what I rolled??” asked the nervous Mia as she watched her piece slide to the tenth space. An orange one.

“Yeah, I mean if we roll in this area it must have some sensors inside or maybe it used a microphone when you-” Sophie started rambling some hypotheses, but was interrupted.

A loud P’TIIING bell sound rang out as three cards shot out the side of the board. Each one stuck out half an inch, enough to read a title across the top and the word CHALLENGE in orange below it.

After a moment of silence Sophie had a new hypothesis. “I think you’re supposed to pick one,” she said.

The girls all looked at each other then leaned in to read the options.

The three titles were “Cold Press”, “Backbone Blitz”, and “Sting Operation”.

All three looked at each other, internally debating the options. Due to their competitiveness, Faith and Sophie wanted to keep all their strategy close to the chest, not wanting to give the other an edge of any kind.

Mia felt something wrong with this weird game but just had to go along with it to appease the other two. She thought about her options.
