The fire alarm goes off

Candace almost fell off the platform, startled by the ear-piercing sound of the school's fire alarm. Absently, she held her arms in front of her chest, almost not understanding what was going on.

The students chattered amongst themselves, until one boy pointed toward the door and yelled, "oh, shit!" Everyone looked, and saw a thick plume of smoke billowing in from the hallway!

"Fire!"

The students panicked, all crowding into the hallway, Doug close behind them. "C'mon, Candace!" he called, waving her forward. Candace gasped, hopping down from the platform, then stopped short and turned back to grab her robe.
