The combination works, but with nothing inside

Jessica distinctly felt the security guard's hand never leaving her back as the pair walked up all the flights of stairs to Jessica's third-floor locker. They got to the locker, and after the guard mercifully took his burly hand off her tender back, Jessica tried the combination one last time before the guard had to use the bolt cutters.

Much to Jessica's surprise, the lock actually clicked this time, and pulled out from the shackle, letting Jessica open her locker frantically...

to see that it was barren and empty.

"Well," the security guard chuckled. "I guess you just wanted to see me, huh?"

"Um, um..." Jessica stammered, "I gotta go!" before running from the security guard with nothing but her lock in her hand. She didn't know whether to go straight to her PE class as she was, or to stop at the lost and found and be a couple minutes later, but lucky for her they were both in the same general direction and away from the guard.
