Chapter 3

The bus ride
As I approach the city bus stop—far removed from the more traditional yellow school buses that my classmates board—I ponder over the daily commute that's become my secret ritual. When we moved farther away from the school, I didn't inform anyone. My parents assume I still catch the school bus, and my friends, well, they've never asked because I’ve never invited anyone over. The school, geographically and metaphorically, feels like it's in another universe compared to my new home.
nod at Bill, the friendly but always worn-out bus driver who's seen more of life than he'd probably like to admit. "Morning, Jared," he greets, managing a warm but tired smile.
"Morning, Bill," I reply, swiping my transit card before navigating to an empty seat.
As the city unfurls outside the window, its buildings and faces blending into an indistinct tableau, I catch the eye of Mrs. Clarke. She's a regular, always engrossed in a new mystery novel. Today, she looks up from her book and offers a quick, knowing smile. It's as if she senses my current state of uncertainty, or maybe she just imagines it; either way, I return the smile before I lose myself in my thoughts again.
The impending reality that I can't sustain this commute asserts itself in my mind. I consider confiding in Bill or Mrs. Clarke; after all, they've unwittingly become part of my daily life. But even as the idea flits through my mind, I reject it. How could they offer a solution when the crux of the problem is rooted in choices I've made—or failed to make?
Disembarking at my usual stop, I offer Bill a cursory wave and step off the bus. As the hydraulic doors close, sealing me into another day's challenges and opportunities, I head down the path leading to the school. Emily, a classmate on the debate team, jogs past me, lost in her morning exercise routine but alert enough to offer a quick "Hey, Jared!"
"Hey," I return, surprised by the unexpected yet fleeting interaction. As Emily speeds away, her ponytail bouncing with each stride, I find myself adrift in another fantasy. I envision myself standing on the edge of a debate stage, locking eyes with Emily across the room. We're opponents, but the electric tension between us suggests a different kind of engagement altogether. As the debate intensifies, my arguments flowing with unprecedented eloquence, Emily's eyes widen. It's as if she's seeing me for the first time—not just as a teammate, but as someone worth her attention.
The crowd roars in approval, but the noise fades into the background, leaving only Emily and me in a world of our own making. She steps toward me, microphone still in hand, and the setting morphs; we're no longer in a debate hall but alone in a cozy cafe, isolated from the buzz of life happening outside our private bubble.
"Jared," she says, her eyes locking onto mine, "you're incredible."
The word hangs in the air between us, its implications tantalizing. We both lean in, pulled by a magnetic **** that erases all past hesitations. My inner world shatters as someone slams a car door close by.
