Chapter 9 by Ashlight Ashlight

Which book?

The Wisdom of Lord Commander Hall

Jaylon Hall was one of her father's most trusted generals, and side by side, he had fought along with king Cassian to carve out this kingdom from nothing. A man who revolutionized siege battles and transformed a bunch of peasents into hardened veterans, there's nobody in Gardius who doesn't know his name. Statues of the man stood in every barracks across the kingdom, as if he could bestow his wisdom upon his successors just by watching over them. In truth, Hall would've been disgusted to see the current state of the army, and Alice shares that feeling. He was the exemplar that the kingdom needed, not men like Kurtis who rode on the glory of the past. Like all good men though, Hall died relatively early. Not a glorious ****, like many envision, but merely from a small scrape that turned into infection on the field.

Still, the wisdom within this tome was real, and while Alice knew that she wouldn't become a master tactician in one day, she wouldn't be caught off guard if she at least memorizes some of the key points. Who knows, perhaps the day that she commands an army herself might come sooner rather than later, if things don't settle down around here.

After making notes, jotting down anecdotes, and reciting the lord commander's most famous battles, Alice feels as though her knowledge of tactics and stratagems have improved tremendously. Any further improvement would have to come from tutorship from a mentor of sorts.

Sliding the book back onto the shelf, she considers what to do next...
