The Root of Evil

Chapter 51 by Perversidade3

That Court of Owls thinks it owns the very ground I walk on.

Michael's words echoed down the hallway, breaking the heavy silence of the mansion's meeting room. He didn't look at anyone; his cold eyes were fixed on the holographic map hovering above the mahogany table, bathing everyone's faces in an almost cadaverous neon-blue glow.

The light from the fireplace, though strong, seemed insufficient. It struggled against an invisible density filling the room—a weight stemming not from the expensive furniture, but from the bloody history binding those people together. There, the mahogany table wasn't for dining, but for dissecting the anatomy of a monster: the Court of Owls. And none of those present were saintly enough to feign shock.

Brianna Wayne didn't move. Her crossed arms were the only rigid element of her posture, yet her gray eyes betrayed the coldness of someone who had already secretly buried half the city. She knew that architectural pattern better than anyone. The Court didn't build bases; it built tombs for those it condemned.

"We aren't dealing with the dockside gangs or circus-act psychopaths," Brianna said quietly, devoid of theatrics. "They are the city's rotten foundation. If the Court falls, Gotham bleeds out completely—and I intend to be the one holding the knife."

"Which means they’ll unleash thousands of Talons the moment we touch that door," Rachael interrupted, wearing a wry smile that didn't reach her eyes. "If we go any further, we’ll need a coordinated collapse on the upper floors. We have to create chaos up there so they don't even realize the basement has been breached and we’re carving up their leaders." Beside her, Batgirl typed furiously on a tablet, the screen’s glow reflecting off her glasses.

"I’m already infiltrating the servers. If I take down the comms network, they’ll be blind. Without tactical coordination, the Talons become nothing more than disposable pawns."

Jade let out a dry laugh, crossing her arms over her chest with a metallic clank that made Batgirl jump.

"A beautiful plan, Rachael. But the Court doesn't use Wi-Fi to issue kill orders. They use blood and rituals. You want to send cute little warnings? That’s why Gotham remains a cesspool."

"Your caution is almost pathetic," Talia al Ghul’s voice rang out like a blade—cold and precise. She hadn't moved from the corner of the room, yet her presence seemed to fill the entire space. "This place’s weakness has always been its reluctance to root out evil entirely. You want plastic surgery for a cancer, but the Court demands total amputation—without anesthesia."

Daria, Talia’s daughter, stepped forward. The movement was fluid, lethal, and predatory. Her hand rested on the hilt of her katana—not as a direct threat, but as the nervous tic of someone who preferred the sound of breaking bones to any negotiation.

"My mother is right. The League doesn't operate on 'coordinated distractions.' Let me lead the vanguard and tear the head off every Talon that shows up. They are mere echoes of a training regimen we perfected by slitting throats."

Jade tilted her head, her ironic smile turning venomous as her eyes burned with the memory of all the times she had come close to death.

"Watch your tone, brat. We aren't here to turn this into a gratuitous bloodbath just so you can prove to your mother that you know how to hold a sword. If the Talons come, we’ll grind them to dust—but we’ll do it methodically." The tension in the room reached its breaking point. The air was electric; those women’s natural inclination toward violence and control threatened to shatter the alliance before they even left the mansion.

That was when Michael stood up.

He didn’t shout, nor did he slam his fist on the table. As a god among mortals and assassins, the sheer gravity of his presence caused silence to crash down upon the room. He looked at each of them, assessing the cruelty etched into their faces.

"Talia and Daria possess the violence we need," Michael began, his voice calm yet carrying a divine resonance that vibrated in their very bones. "But Rachael’s tactical coldness and Brianna’s relentless obsession are what will ensure not a single stone is left standing in that godforsaken owl’s nest."

He pointed to two distinct spots on the hologram: the financial vault and the command center.

"We aren't playing at justice. We are going to storm the fortress, using the League’s brutality to crush their defenses and the Waynes’ precision to ensure no one makes it out alive."

He took a step forward, his eyes gleaming with the promise of ruin.

"Let the preparations begin, ladies."
