Chapter 33 by johnsohn johnsohn

How does the night go?

The Rival is found

The rain has eased to a fine mist by the time I reach the dive bar district, two miles blurring beneath my boots. Neon signs flicker above grimy doorways. "Lucky's," "The Pit." Thin crowds spill into the night. The app's map pulses urgently in my pocket, the circle shrinking to a narrow alley between a shuttered tattoo parlor and a bar thick with cigarette smoke. Every shadow feels heavier after that nightmare. Elena's mine. No rival changes that.

I slip into the alley. The walls close in, slick with graffiti, and puddles mirror the harsh buzz of a sodium lamp overhead. A figure hunches against the brick wall, back turned. A silhouette smaller than I'd pictured. Hood up, jeans faded, sneakers scuffed. I approach quietly. The app chimes sharply: Rival Signature Confirmed. Proximity: 5 meters. Neutralization Weave Primed.

"Hey," I call out, my voice low and steady, keeping a cautious distance.

She startles slightly, then turns, blinking through wire-rimmed glasses fogged by the mist. Not a man. She's young, sharp-featured yet soft around the edges, with Asian features and hair cropped close beneath her hood. Her phone glows in her hand, Mindweave icons swirling across the screen. Identical to mine.

"Whoa, hey, sorry!" She raises her hands slowly, showing they're empty. Her voice carries easily, a touch rushed but warm. "You got pulled here by that ping too? I thought my app was glitching out."

"I followed the ping," I say, my shoulders still tense against the chill. "Two miles through the rain. You sending out rival signatures on purpose?"

She laughs lightly, tucking her phone away. "No way. I'm Kira, by the way. Not looking to fight in a back alley, promise. The app's been weird since I hit Adept. It started flagging anyone nearby as a 'rival.' Probably doesn't like two users overlapping territory. You at Adept too?"

The app vibrates again: Rival Proximity Alert. Hostility Scan: Neutral. I glance at my screen, then hers. She's right. "Yeah, Adept. So this ping's the app playing gatekeeper? Keeping zones exclusive unless we're at each other's throats?"

Kira nods, shoving her glasses up her nose with a grin. "Exactly. Mine calmed down once it scanned you weren't hostile. Yours too?" She peeks at my phone. "See? Neutral. Means we can... I don't know, team up? Beats solo grinding tiers in the dark."

I huff a breath, the knot in my chest loosening. Her vibe disarms me. No edge, just genuine curiosity. "Bad timing on my end. Woke up from a nightmare, thought someone was weaving into my head. Messing with what's mine."

She tilts her head, posture relaxing fully. "Dream-weaving? That's advanced. I stick to waking nudges, nothing invasive. App just appeared one morning, no fanfare. Started small: barista forgets my change, commuters dodge each other smoothly. Multi-target weaves mostly. Keeps things light, tests limits without blowback. You?"

The alley stays empty around us, rain pattering softly. Her casual flow contrasts my bindings sharply, but it intrigues me. "Tech firm by day. This app? It's systemic for me. Harem tiers, full claims, devotion loops. Ambitious. Binding people deep."

Her eyes widen, amused rather than shocked. "Harems? Bold. I juggle crowds. Bus riders untangling, joggers safer at night. Bartenders tip better without knowing why. Low-stakes, high-volume. But teaming up? We could cross-train. Your bindings with my multi-threads. Cover more ground, push tiers faster. App might even reward it. No rivalry penalty."

I study her, mist beading on my hoodie. She's cordial, resourceful, no threat. "All right, Kira. Show me your threads. If they mesh, we work together."

She beams, pulling out her phone again. "Deal. Watch this." Her fingers dance across the screen, targeting a late-night duo stumbling from the bar. A subtle weave ripples out—invisible to us, but their steps sync, laughter easing as they navigate the slick street without slipping. "Multi-target calm. Clean, no addiction. Your turn, demo a bind?"

I select a passing jogger, whisper a light tease command through the app. His pace falters, eyes glazing briefly before he shakes it off and hurries on. Kira whistles softly. "Smooth. Devotion anchor?"

"Tease mode," I explain. "It ramps up desire but doesn’t fully bind them, just keeps them wanting more. Think about it, your crowd effects stoking the appetite, then I lock in on the ones you prime."

We lean against the wall, screens glowing in the dim light, trading techniques as the night deepens. She demos crowd-flow weaves, subtle redirects keeping alleys clear, bar lines shortening. I share proxy commands, devotion amps from my harem bonds. Stories spill out: her rush-hour near-miss, my Tessa oath cycle. Laughter cuts the mist; questions sharpen our edges.

The app hums approval: Collaborator Detected. Synergy Bonus: +10% Weave Efficiency. No rivalry now, just alliance.

By first light creeping over rooftops, we've swapped numbers, linked apps tentatively. "Tomorrow night?" Kira suggests, pocketing her phone. "We can test a joint weave?"

The thought of partnering with someone leaves me a bit hesitant, but I want to learn what she knows.

"Sure" I reply with a friendly smile. "I'd like that. Nice to meet you Kira, glad you're not an enemy."

She gives a chuckle at that before I turn away and head back to the apartment.
