The Officer Keeps the Bone

As Jake lunged towards the Cop, making a mad dash to grab the bone back, he suddenly reeled back, stumbling over as the officer gave him a swift punch to the gut. Jake tripped back, now leaning against the car door and clutching his stomach.

“That’s it, son! You’re under arrest for attempting to **** an officer of the law!” The officer grabbed his tightly by the wrist, twisting him around and forcing his hands behind his back.

As he took his handcuffs out, he thought to himself, ‘What in the world could be so important about this bone…? Whatever, I’ll make him tell me on the ride over.’

In the instant he finished his thought, he felt the bone suddenly heat and pulse in his hand, as if it were alive. Jake suddenly turned his head just enough to face the officer, and began to speak.

“It’s magic… It has the ability to make other people change in any way you want. I was gonna use it to turn my bitchy ex-girlfriend into a maid with that costume.” He spoke in an almost robotic tone, as if he wasn’t saying it willingly.

After he finished speaking, Jake’s eyes went wide and his face grew pale, quickly trying to cover it up. “I-I mean… that… that uh… that was just a dumb joke! I-it really is just a dumb lucky charm!”

The Officer was not feeling particularly pleased with this interaction. “Son, are you on ****? There is no way in hell that something like this could do ANYTHING you just said. Now shut up and come with me.” Again the Officer momentarily felt an odd throbbing warmth coming from the bone, but it must’ve just been some trick or his imagination.

Jake wanted to reply, but he couldn’t seem to open his mouth. It felt like his lips were glued together. His legs moved briskly as the officer guided him to his Police Vehicle and sat him down. After buckling him up, the Officer got in the front seat and began to drive Jake down to the station.

The Officer chuckled to himself quietly in the back, still twiddling with the bone in his hand. “Honestly, you couldn’t really expect me to believe a word of that could you…?” He was met with silence as Jake was still unable to even move his lips apart.

“Hey, when I’m asking you something, you answer. Got it?” To which Jake instantly replied without a hint of hesitation. “Yes, Officer.”

“That’s more like it. Now, we got a long way to the station, so I’m gonna ask you again, and you’re gonna be completely honest with me.” The bone began to warm in his palm cementing Jake as being unable to lie. “Why did you want this thing back so bad?”

Without even a moment to think about what he would say, the words poured out of Jake’s mouth. “I was being honest. It really is a magic bone that can control people, like how you’re forcing me to be honest with you. I wanted it back because I knew if you said anything, it could change me in ways that I wouldn’t be able to fix…”

The Officer looked into his mirror towards Jake, “Didn’t I JUST tell you to be honest with me?” Before he could even get another word out, Jake was obliged to answer his question.

“Yes, sir, you did. I am being honest with you.” Jake spoke calmly, but was visibly completely terrified. He wanted to do or say anything to fix this, but he couldn’t speak unless he was answering the Officer’s questions.

“Fine, I’ll play along with it!” The cop spoke with an irate tone. “I’m gonna nip this in the bud, right now. Let’s say this thing is real.” He said, as he stopped at a red light. “If I can make anything happen, then…” He turned to look at Jake directly, thinking for a moment before he was reminded of that French maid outfit Jake had. “I wish you actually were a perfect fit for that costume!”
