The New Girl
June, Sonia, and Amelia were sitting together on the long end of the wrap-around couch listening to Lauren Waters. She was the person that the government had selected to be their liaison with Caleb. Ever since she arrived it seemed she was doing everything possible to annoy June. She had brought with her a pair of women that she introduced as her assistants but treated like servants.
Currently she was going over an itinerary of events that she had drawn up for the next month that 'Caleb simply had to attend'. It consisted almost entirely of stretching and breeding the rich and famous and attending functions for members of congress, with a visit to one or two hospitals to heal the critically ill thrown in, purely for photo ops and public relations hype. The liaison would have him attending a new event nearly every other day in cities all over the country. She had assumed that he would drop out of school since 'the government would make sure he received a diploma so there was no need for him to keep going'.
Amelia was curious to see how long it would take until June blew her top. Megumi mentioned that June sometimes had an explosive temper, and the government woman seemed to be trying to light June's fuse. The few questions June asked early on in the presentation had been brushed aside. Worse, Lauren Waters hadn't been interested in learning the names of Caleb's concubines, since 'concubines were hardly important people and he would probably replace them regularly anyway'. June's face became a mask at that point. She'd crossed her arms and sat back, no longer asking any questions at all.
Then Lauren suggested setting Caleb up with a celebrity girlfriend since 'a poor high school girl would get overwhelmed by all the fame'. Amelia smiled and waited. June really liked Kathy, and her family's circumstances were no fault of their own. Insulting Kathy because she was poor was really bad judgement on the liaison's part. June hadn't made a single comment over four words long in for over ten minutes. Just a bunch of 'I see', 'and then what', and 'go on'.
Amelia may have been amused, but Sonia had listened to enough. Sonia had been getting to know the entire family and learning as much about Caleb as she could. She knew Caleb would never do most of what the idiot liaison wanted. Sure he might like to meet some movie stars and other celebrities, but he was really a down to earth kind of guy. He would be offended by the suggestion of a photo op in a hospital, and she knew without any doubts at all that he would rather lose an arm than set Kathy to the side while some celebrity was put in her place.
Sonia was obviously exasperated when finally she interrupted, "Excuse me, but I have a question."
Lauren was visibly annoyed by the interruption. She curtly sneered, "And that is?"
"What is the US government going to do about the security concerns that our team identified?" Sonia kept her voice pleasant through sheer **** of will.
Lauren waved her hand dismissively as she brushed aside Sonia's concerns, "We will do nothing about them. The Stretcher King won't be home enough for there to be a need for a large security team here. A portion of the team will remain in the area when he is attending these events, however, I think even that is excessive. But I really don't see how it's the business of the UN how we choose to protect our Stretcher King. It's hardly a concern for you anyway since I doubt the Stretcher King will ever have a reason to travel to Mexico of all places."
The condescending way she made that last statement had Sonia wanting to gouge her eyes out. June placed a hand on Sonia's own and spoke, "Lauren, would you answer a few of my questions?"
Turning to June, her voice became all sunshine and roses as she sweetly said, "Of course."
June sat up straighter and barked, "How many dicks did you suck to get this job?"
"Excuse me?" Lauren hissed, affronted.
June stood and bit each word off as she snapped, "I said, How many dicks did you suck to get this job?"
Amelia wanted to giggle with glee as she watched June lose her temper.
June's voice rose as if a storm were set free in her home, "How fucking dare you come into my home and act as if my son, who I carried with his sister for 9 months, went through 21 hours of labor with, and spent the last 18 years raising, belonged to you or the fucking government! He! Is! My! Son! Not the governments public relations cum dispenser!"
The liaison took a hasty step back as June entered her personal space with a sneer on her lips. "My son has no intention of dropping out of school! He plans to go to college and get a degree. His concubines are part of this family, and should be treated with respect, not talked about as if they were furniture to be tossed aside! He will never in a million years replace his girlfriend for some brainless idiot you picked out from Hollywood! And I will be damned if you think he's going to go traipsing around the country to wherever the hell you decide!"
June's voice changed again, this time to a deep growl as if she were barely restraining herself, "How dare you dismiss the security concerns of my son's priestess! Oh, did we forget to mention that, or did you blather on with your idiotic wants without learning a damn thing about my family! Sonia here is from the Sisterhood of the Heavenly Cock, and was chosen by my son to be our family's personal priestess! These two women have become close friends of the family, not just some UN bureaucrats!"
"And another thing, I absolutely can not wait till my children graduate! I have always wanted to travel to Mexico, and we will. I want to see the Uxmal Mayan ruins and Teotihuacan Pyramids and swim in the cenotes of Tulum. Sonia and Amelia have been a delight to have in my home and my family is looking forward to them showing us where they come from. We may end up spending the whole summer split between their two countries. So you can take your itinerary and shove it up your ass! And when you're done, get out of my house!" June screamed while pointing towards the door.
After the liaison and her assistants left, Amelia and Sonia held June in a group hug to calm her down. When the door bell rang again, June stomped over to the door, yanked it open and shouted, "What the hell dooooOh my god your Melissa Franklin!"
The channel 2 news weather girl cheerily bubbled, "Hi, you must be June Anders. I know I'm early, but did we come at a bad time?"
June invited her in and introduced Sonia and Amelia, her entire demeanor changing in an instant. June ran to get drinks for Melissa and her camerawoman. As they sat Melissa immediately began asking questions about what had upset June.
As June answered her Sonia noticed that the camera was recording. She opened her mouth to say something, but before she could, Amelia put a hand on her thigh and shook her head. Sonia took the hint and sat back. They both knew you had to watch your mouth around a reporter, but in this case June's ignorance may do some good. They listened as June complained about the governments plan to 'hijack her son' and the condescending way their liaison had dismissed their concerns for his safety.

The Normality Dial
Changing reality with a word
This story is based off a branch of Murakami's Normality found here. https://chyoa.com/chapter/Introduction.174576 In this story, our hero Caleb Anders, finds a watch that allows him to change reality, with certain rules based on the time the watch is set at. A special thanks to BiBiComte and CrossC for allowing me to reprint their own chapters here. I have credited them for each of their chapters at the start of those chapters. I may have made a few minor changes and grammatical corrections, though I am by no means perfect myself.
