Thanksgiving Break: Spirits and Spades

That evening after everyone's food had settled Leah found herself sitting around the now cleared dining room table. Leah sat across from Jonathan as he shuffled cards.

"I hope you are ready for 'spirits and spades.'" he said as he conducted a flourish with the cards he shuffled.

"Spirits and spades?" she asked her face belying her amusement.

"Yeah its great." Luke said taking a seat at the table.

"A family Turkey day tradition." Tommy said joining the three at the table.

"You play spades?" Leah asked. She knew card games after Thanksgiving had often been a thing--but her family never took part during her own family's Thanksgivings (except some distant relative or two).

"Yeah--but since we are adults now we mix it up and enjoy drinking." Jonathan said with a grin.

"Ah the spirits. I thought it was some weird 'spirit of Thanksgiving' or something" Leah mused.

"I don't think I will be joining you this evening." Ashley said as she put a hand on her very expectant tummy. "No spirits for this one."

"Ha ha yeah no." Luke said giving his wife a kiss then sitting back down. "get some sleep."

"I couldn't drink any more anyway--I am stuffed." she smiled.

"It's okay dear you can hang out with me in the den." Tammy said moving toward her favorite recliner.

"Don't stay up too late." Ashley said giving everyone at the table a "serious" glare then a smile.

"Do you know how to play spades?" Luke asked.

"Eh," she shrugged "Kind of? Its been a while."

"Well we can go over the rules. But first you need a drink. What would you like?" Jonathan asked as he got to his feet to head toward the kitchen.
